I heard that from 11 FEB 2009, the price of speeding tickets is as follows:
10-15km over the limit: R500
16-20kkm over : R1000

That's hard to believe because the old prices were R100 and R200 respectively.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Thanks

I also got that information in an email.

Anyone wish to clarify?

It is False

I got a speeding fine on 28/02 going 139 in a 120 zone and it was R500

well i just got a speeding fine on the 21/03, 129 in a 100 zone, R600, so it can't be true, but i have heard of them putting it up during the holiday periods

96Km in a 60 was a R1500 rand fine and thats 36km/h over.

Fines and demerits

Demerits will be rated according to a unit scale. For example, a motorist with an unregistered vehicle, will be docked two demerit points from his 12 points and get 10 penalty units which will mean a fine of R500. Leaving a driving licence at home, will cost the driver two demerit points and a R500 fine. If caught not wearing a seatbelt, s/he will get one demerit point and pay a R250 fine. Not stopping at a stop sign and overloading with more than 25% will cost drivers three demerit points.

Repeated speedsters will face hefty fines and demerit points.

Drivers caught speeding in 60 km/h zones:

71 km/h - 75 km/h: R250 + 0 demerit points

76 km/h - 80 km/h: R500 + 1 demerit point

81 km/h - 85 km/h: R750 + 2 demerit points

86 km/h - 90 km/h: R1000 + 3 demerit points

91 km/h - 95 km/h: R1250 + 4 demerit points.

Drivers caught speeding in 80 km/h zones:

91 km/h - 95 km/h: R250 + 0 demerit points

96 km/h - 100 km/h: R500 + 1 demerit point

101 km/h - 105 km/h: R750 + 2 demerit points

106 km/h - 110 km/h: R1000 + 3 demerit points

111 km/h - 115 km/h: R1250 + 4 demerit points.

Drivers caught speeding in 100 km/h zones:

111 km/h - 115 km/h: R250 + 0 demerit points

116 km/h - 120 km/h: R500 + 1 demerit point

121 km/h - 125 km/h: R750 + 2 demerit points

126 km/h - 130 km/h: R1000 + 3 demerit points

131 km/h - 135 km/h: R1250 + 4 demerit points.

Drivers caught speeding in 120 km/h zones:

131 km/h - 135 km/h: R250 + 0 demerit points

136 km/h - 140 km/h: R500 + 1 demerit point

141 km/h - 145 km/h: R750 + 2 demerit points

146 km/h - 150 km/h: R1000 + 3 demerit points

151 km/h - 155 km/h: R1250 + 4 demerit points.

Those who drive more than 35 km/h over the legal speed limit, will be arrested immediately.

According to Thandi Moya from RTMC, drivers have five options when they are fined. They can:

get 50% off if they pay within 32 days;

make arrangements to pay it off;

indicate that someone else was driving the vehicle at the time of the offence;

put their case in court; or

make representations.

In Gauteng it might be true. My brother-in-law is a metro-cop and he told us about the new fines a few weeks ago already...
