On good authority

I think we should all be careful of using the 'good authority' tagline. How good is good - CEO? Lets all be responsible broadband authorities.

and companies don't spend cash on dedicated cache servers with terrabytes of storage, new base stations, 15MB lines and expanding the helpdesk when they're about to go bankrupt, plus I'd assume WBS is a big enough company with the whole lotto thing to keep iBurst up for at least a year without making profit

Is there evidence that the WBS iBurst Helpdesk is finally being expanded

Hi Slimothy

Just wondering why you say that WBS are expanding the Helpdesk, what do you know that I do not know...;)

Regards

ic.

i presume that if they have bought 15Mb line, bought a new proxy server, putting up new towers and are expanding help desk then they probably are going to run out of money if they carry on with the spending spree.

subscribers dropping like flies. probably. i know i have lost faith in them completley. atleast i have a new xmas decoration this year. and look mom this one has a blue light :D

you might be right...but never ever make a statement like this without proof! Its very unprofessional and unnecessary! Rather be more constructive with your time on the web :P

i know that theyre hiring people to take the helpdesk 24/7
Ok, at last count there were 7 Helpdesk staffers (that's including Dylan the Helpdesk Manager).

As per my question raised somewhere in another thread, has anyone noticed any new names of Helpdesk people? If the answer to that is NO, then I say there is 0 evidence that the 15th floor are hiring new staff right now, and that being true, you should not expect 24*7 Helpdesk support...

If you have any new names, please post them here, or send me a p.m. so we can do a head count ;).

I thought I would throw my 2 cents in here. As mentioned before in a post regarding HiFi CORP selling modems, I had a few minutes to question the CEO, Thami Mtshali at the ICASA hearings on Friday.

I will make it clear that I tried being diplomatic and did not question him on the Network issues, but rather the bigger picture and how things were going.

The few facts he did mention were the following:

Base stations roll-out is on schedule, and they will have 50 up and running by the end off this month, making the total 100 (I have not bothered verifying this on the web site) By the end of July they plan to add an additional 50. This is where he left the discussion.

He gave no indication that there were any financial troubles (not that he would in public) but there was nothing stated that might have even suggested.

He was ever the salesman, showing off the product (on his laptop) even though there was no reception inside the room, he went outside into the tea room to get a connection.

He seemed pretty happy with the current roll-out, and told us the story of one user buying 180 gigs (see other post)

Something else to keep in mind is that WBS is a very well run and profitable company before IBUrst came onto the market. The own and control the infrastructure used to run the State Lottery, and I am sure they have some serious investors backing this project.

Once again I did not pin him down about Network issues reported on this site and what I have been experiencing for the last 4 months, as I felt it was not the appropriate time & place.......maybe next time

Along with exponential growth in any IT/ISP company comes some problems. Let hope Iburst have reached the CAP of their problems and that things only get better from here.

Hope this info contributes to the debate?

well said. no realistic venture capitalist or investor expects to make a profit from day one. they would have factored in enough spare cash flow to keep the business going for at minimum a year. given their financial backers, i am sure that they must have presented a sound business case as well to get the capital injection. if anything, i think they underestimated the take on, or their network capacity planners f'ed up the anticipated capacity requirements (very unlikely). i also dont think that they anticapated their upstream provider (UUNET) letting them down so badly... the difference between wbs and sentech is that wbs have an expansion plan, and sound reasoning behind it. they were just caught with their pants down with the rapid influx of subscribers. me thinks that with enough time and patience, they will get it sorted out. need i remind everyone how bad vodacoms and mtns coverage was when they first launched? today voice bandwidth is a expected commodity item. bandwidth will be the same soon.

the only mistake i can see in wbs' business plan is that they didnt limit subscriber count. they should have rather added users AFTER capacity was added...

WBS, should of been on Pre-Launch for 1 year to test there network then sell Commercially, so no issue like this could happen.

If vodacom 3 G, they got alone this month about 400 BASE STATION, and are spending about R3,4 billion, WBS are spending about R400 million each base station costing around R2 million which will 200 base station up by end of the year/next.

WBS are lossing loads of clients, my one friend, owns a company and he is going down the drain, he bought about 20 UT-D, and it aint going well.

I've also been reading on the Forum about WBS over selling or something, thats why there aint BANDWIDTH, not sure if this statement is true.

I think hell would freeze over before that ever happened.

I believe in the technology, and I know that WBS ain't Sentech. You see, I know something about Sentech, having dealt with them in my various jobs over the years. I knew even before MyWireless was launched not to touch it with a barge pole.

Fact is, I have three people, one of whom is family, on iBurst and they have not ever complained.

I have it on very good authority that iburst dont cap your ass when you reach your cap limit. They simply suspend your account.

I have it on good authority that WBS mobile/IBurst either:

don't honour their business contracts and contractual obligations - or

deliberately and fraudulently misrepresent their Service in public advertisments, with the intention of misleading potential customers.

I'm not sure which of the above two options is the 'true' one.

Who wants to email IBurst in Australia and ask if they can help work out which is true? :P
