Hi All

I've started running in the last year or so and have gotten to a point where I can comfortably run 10km in just over an hour. My question is what is my next step? Would it be to up my speed and run quicker or keep the pace and run longer? Not quite sure, also not sure what my goal is, I just like running.

As you said, you dont really know what your goal is.

Personally, I dont like running more than 10km. I find it takes too much time, it hurts my joints and knee's and I stop enjoying it.
So, if it was me, I would try increase my overall pace.

Also try mix it up a bit, try do a faster 5 or 8km a few times to keep your body entertained.
Have you thought of supplementing running with another exercise? Possibly mountain biking or rowing? Even try do some running and cycling combo's. Its incredibly tough to transition between cycling and running, but it does provide a nice change to the general plodding along.

As I said, this is all my opinion. If you have the time and enjoy running that much, maybe try set a goal of a marathon in a years time? Then search for a marathon training programme and see how you enjoy it.

Lastly, because i cant help it, i recommend squash. Always.

Join a running club they have weekly time trials of 5 and 8km which really improves your times.

I've recently started mountain biking about 4 months ago, find that the cycling really helps my running but not so much the other way around. As for squash, I'll try that in winter. Doing the 2oceans this year. So we'll see how that goes

Take part in fun runs, there are plenty and it really is great to run with other athletes.

Personally I only go as far as 21.1km (half marathon) so I would recommend you increase the distance gradually. You might also want to consider cross training, cycling is an excellent form of cross training if you are a rubber.

Depends on where you are running. I am seriously looking forward to my next two half marathons, one of which will be the two oceans half.

Did a 15km race this weekend, really enjoyed it. Did it in 1h40. Now to complete the training for the 2 oceans half.

Tomorrow I'm gonna take part in the Morula Running Club 10 km race in Soshanguve. I recently started taking part in races. I took part in a 10 km race in the Deloitte Marathon as well as the Sunnyside 10 km race. I did both races in 53 and 51 minutes respectively.

So I recommend you increase your pace and complete a 10 km race in at least 45 minutes, that's what I'm working towards. If you, like me, are not of a member of a running club yet, then this is an excellent website listing most racing events around the country.

Thanks for the link great site

I am in the same situation that you are in. I am able to run 10km 'comfortably', but I also do cycling and swimming as part of my triathlon training.

My advice. Read a book called Born to Run.

Nice do you do on road or off road triathlons?
