its me again, my wifes laptop gave in last night but it seems to working in a way, i have tried reinstalling windows xp and a repair and its on again, however if i run a chkdsk it says the following:

warning F parameter not specified
running chkdsk in read only.

what does this mean, please, en baie dankie.

thats what i thought but if it tells me its a read only thing that means it wont fix anything, i see you wrote chkdsk /f must i do it like that?

At a command prompt, run "chkdsk /f". If it's C: drive, it'll run next time you reboot.

Yes, it might ask you to confirm on next restart, just go yes.

ok i went there now and it says the following:

type file is NTFS
cannot lock current drive
chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process
do you want the volume to be checked on next restart.

should i say yes and power off then switch on again?

Open the Command Prompt.
Type the following: CHKDSK /?

You will get a list of 'switches' for that utility.
Using CHKDSK /F will actually FIX ERRORS on the disk. Without it, it will just display them.

CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]

i prefer booting off the WinXP cd -> recovery console

chkdsk /R

ja i took it to the guy i bought it from and as it is a refurbished laptop i guess i can expect these things to happen, its actually the 2nd harddrive to give in in 2 months.
