How much is it exactly to run a game server. What kind of pc do you need and how would the bandwidth work on that?

and how would it work for a game like guild wars or WoW.?
what specs are needed for these things?

Are you planning on running the server on your own i-net connection? It would probably cheaper to hire on from www.hypegamez.co.za. Fixed monthly fee, no i-net traffic fees, no hardware costs.

i'd like to know though how much is to do everything on ur own,,, just like the other people who are doing it on their own..

You don't because these games' servers are owned solely by their companies and not open for public use unless Reverse engineered

And why host Guildwars? It's free anyway

no, i'm just curious as to what is all involved in running those kind of servers. i dont want to host a guild qars server.. just curious.
and u could always host a local guild wars server anyways. like usa and europe

Firstly its dodgy server code and even the actual servers running the actual code have problems sometimes

Secondly the more technical side

A game like WoW uses about 6-22kb/s downstream from their service provider solely for the game traffic. So for sake of easy calculations lets go with 16kb/s which equates roughly to 2kbps for 1 person
Add upstream to this to make a nice 4kbps per person connected.

If you looked at a normal adsl with max 512kbps upstream you'd have a capacity of 128 people maximum. This would be pretty bad as getting 100% from your adsl line up and down stream is a dream at best.

Then processing power,I don't have CPU usage stats on official servers but lets say this. The biggest supercomputer server farm in the world hosting official WoW servers can suffer a cascading failure with as many as 200people raiding the same area in the same instance/zone ID as the processing power required gets multiplied exponentially with each person in the groups

The logistics of such an endeavour to run acceptable is horrid

so a 4 meg line could run about just over 500 people?

and bandwidth a month would cost you?

No.

a 4 meg line running at impossibly high unshaped efficiency would be able to host 120 people if they didn't come near eachother ever

And then the bandwidth for this unshaped impossible line would equate to 100% utilization of 512kbps down and upstream 24-7

(128kb/s x 60 x 60 x 24 x 31) /1000

342 835.2

342Gigs unshaped bandwidth at R125 per gig

Ooh nifty,a nearly R9000 bill to run a shoddy service

Just ask IS gaming, Iburst, or SGS to host the server you want for you.
