Hi guys, I want to dabble with OS X El Capitan and get a feel for Mac before getting one. Has anyone successfully run mac os on a windows pc?

If so please help me out. I have read up on it and seen a couple of videos but not sure how easy it really will or will not be

The TonyMac site is probably the best source for building a Hackintosh.

I suggest you tryout El Capitan since they already sorted out all the apps and tools required to get it running properly.

I wrote a short article a while back on how to setup a Hackintosh: https://gadgetgrapevine.com/os-x-on-a-windows-pc-is-it-a-viable-option/

I've installed Snow Leopard and every version thereafter on several PCs with very good results. If you are willing to put in the effort to learn how everything works, then you can get your Hackintosh running just as good as a genuine Mac.

Just get a VM image and vmware player

Honestly not worth the effort if only for the sake of trying out Mac OS before going ahead and buying a Mac. Just go ahead and buy a Mac, you will save yourself a lot of time and headaches. Only really worth doing it if you have the time and patients, if you love tinkering around and look forward to the learning experience.

My first time was trouble free. Installed El Capitan onto a 2010 celery night compaq pc. My folks still use it and everything just worked. I had to tinker to have iMessages work but that was it.

Exactly. If you have hardware that's compatible (intel/nvidia) then it's very easy to do if you just follow the tutorials. It gets tricky when you want to use hardware that needs specialized kexts or you need to manually edit kexts to enable things like HDMI audio etc but for getting a normal intel-based desktop PC running on OS X, it's quite easy. Even updating it and getting iMessage/Facetime has become super simple to do.
