S.E. SATIO RELEASED?

Ok,

after using the Satio for a week now, here is my report.
My previous phones were SE K750i, SE C902, Nokia N73,a few older nokias, older samsungs, most recently a Samsung S8300.

I bought this phone from Altech Cellular in the Pavillion last Sunday.
I was really looking for a N97, but the price was approx R8000, whereas
I got the Satio for R 6300.Im glad I got the Satio & not the N97 :)

The phone has Vodafone branding & this causes some minor problems discussed below,
other that that my MTN sim works just fine.

Onto the Satio,

negatives first
1. only once did it freeze where I had to remove the battery to re-start.
I had assigned a tone for the SMS from the memory card. After recieveing
a SMS, the phone froze. I moved the tone from the card to the phone mem & it never
happened since.

2.Vodafone branding. one shortcut on the homescreen is 'Vodafone internet' which I cannot change.
Wish I could get rid of the Vodafone/com splash screens at startup & shutdown but thats
not too serious.

3 Unlocking the phone from standby does not immediately bring up the homescreen, lags a little
but nothing too drastic.this happens only sometimes, not always.

4. No themes as yet for the Satio specifically, but I can use the N97 & 5800 themes, yay !

5. no contacts shortcut on default homescreen setup, this can be changed if u use the S60 screens like the older nokias.

6. Battery. Now I'm sure I can get more than 2 days. never get the chance to fully test this
as I'm always connectiong the USB & it starts charging. heavy internet usage can
deplete the battery quickly, but not as fast as the S8300.

7. Vodafone branding on mine causes complications with net access. MTN sends the WAP settings & the phone installs it, but Vodafone will not allow u to change the 'default' connection from Vodafone WAP.(and u cannot delete the Vodafone point either)
The browser (Opermini) often asks which point to use, this also happens sometimes with geotagging ,which can be irritating if u want to snap a quick pic. Its not ideal but im willing to live with it.

positives :

1. Looks damn good, better that the N97, smaller & lighter too.

2. brilliant screen.

3. fast, no noticable lagging, scrolling through pics etc is a breeze. my
previous phone the Samsung S8300 really battled with this.

4. Largish processor ( 600Mhz) allows for decent multi-tasking. I can have like 6 or more apps
running simult with no lag :)

5. motion control is brillaint, just shake the phone to change wallpapers, turn to mute etc
comes in really handy.

6. comes with a 8 gig MICRO SD card (no more expensive Sony cards)

7. multiple homescreen setup is really clever ( once u get used to it)
I hated the Samsung S8300 scrollabe homescreen cos it was never where u wanted it to be.
the Satio screen does not change randomly as u handle the phone, I cannot explain it.

8. Camera is good, not exactly the best I have seen. Touch focus is brilliant, so is the panorama
best pic etc.

9.Touch screen is accurate, more than the N97.

10. Camera active lens cover is very good too. does not open in your pocket & feels very strudy.

11. GPS is quick off the mark, I have yet to wait for more than a minute to get a lock.
the phone comes with one month of voice guided Garmap & Google maps installed.
Fortunately I kept the 2 year Garmap voucher for the S8300, installed it on the Satio &
it works perfectly.

12.Symbian OS

phew...thats all I can think of for now, oh the radio is good, no RDS but still.

I know that in the UK some carriers have withdrawn the Satio from thei shelves. Dont know
if we in SA get different stock.

Anyone thinking of getting this phone I say GO FOR IT :)
This is by far the best phone I have ever owned (not that Ive had that many)

Cheers

Sony Ericsson Aino pulled out from UK stores just after Satio
27 November, 2009

Only a week ago Carphone Warehouse pulled out the Satio from their stores due to software issues. Now the not-so-touchable Aino followed its Symbian sibling with complaints about touch performance.

Carphone Warehouse along with the Phones4U have withdrawn their remaining supplies of Sony Ericsson Aino. They are hoping Sony Ericsson will fix the bugs soon, otherwise the company’s holiday earnings are seriously threatened. That's the second Sony Ericsson phone causing issues lately and we can't quite remember the last time. It makes you wonder what's going on.

It seems that the affected Aino handsets are not that many and taking care of those won't be hard.http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_aino_pulled_out_from_uk_stores_just_after_satio-news-1286.php

Second Sony Ericsson phone has software problem

* By Simon Johnson - Thu Nov 26, 2009 1:58PM EST

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) -

A second of Sony Ericsson's new smartphones, key to its strategy for returning to profit next year, has been hit by software problems in Britain ahead of a critical sales period.

A spokesman for the world's fourth-largest mobile phone maker said a number of users of the new Aino smartphone, part of the company's Christmas line-up, had experienced problems using the touch screen.

"Obviously we are working as quickly as possible to solve it (the issue)," Sony Ericsson spokesman Mattias Holm said, adding the issue affects only a small number of customers in Britain.

Earlier this week Britain's Carphone Warehouse, Europe's biggest mobile phone retailer, temporarily withdrew Sony Ericsson's recently launched Satio smartphone because of a software problem.

British retailer Phones 4U followed suit.

"Aino and Satio are Sony Ericsson's key products for the final quarter," said analyst Geoff Blaber from British consultancy CCS Insight.

"These problems couldn't come at a worse time -- just as the market approaches the highest volume weeks of the year. They have days not weeks to fix these issues," Blaber said.

Sony Ericsson's Holm said the software problems had only affected a small number of customers in Britain and had not damaged Sony Ericsson's brand.

"At the moment, we don't see any damage or harm done," Holm said. "It is a contained issue affecting only a small number of consumers."

Success in the smartphone market is a key element in Chief Executive Bert Nordberg's plan for returning the firm to profit next year.

Smartphones, with advanced mobile Internet and networking functions, have been the one bright spot in an otherwise depressed handset market over the last year.

While mobile phone makers have been hurt by the global downturn, Sony Ericsson has also suffered because it has lacked a strong smartphone offering to rival Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's BlackBerry.

Sony Ericsson lost 199 million euros ($297 million) in the third quarter and has not made a profit since the first quarter of 2008.
