Marketting Blurb:
The RocketRAID 1640 is a four-channel RAID 5 host adapter, which provides multi level RAID support, including RAID 5, 0, 1, 1+0, JBOD, as well as powerful software management functions. The RocketRAID 1640 Serial ATA RAID host adapter increases disk performance to 1.5Gb/s, and supports most of today's popular OSs' such as Windows 9x/ME/NT4.0/2,K Windows XP, Red Hat, SuSE, Turbo, Caldera Linux and FreeBSD. As a high-performance, affordable RAID solution, the RocketRAID 1640 is well suited for nearly any corporate, industrial, or home environment application. The RocketRAID 1640 Serial ATA RAID host adapter is ideal for small LAN servers, critical business data storage, PC gaming, and high-end personal storage needs. The RocketRAID 1640 is not only able to connect with Serial ATA hard disks, but also can be utilized with standard IDE hard disk drives (when used in combination with the RocketHead100 converter). The RAID Management software can be used to control remote systems, over a network. The administrator can manage several different remote systems that utilize other HighPoint RAID controllers, from a single PC. The software provides options to create, maintain, delete and modify RAID arrays.
Who would want one:
-Anyone needing a RAID solution that is portable. By using a dedicated RAID controller, you can move an existing RAID setup to a new PC/mobo. Normally you would need to unRAID before you move your hard-drives and then reRAID when you've put it in the new comp.
-Anyone wanting to use SATA disks (RAIDed or not) on a computer without SATA capabilities
-Anyone wanting to use more SATA disks than their mobo has connections for
-Anyone wanting to make a RAID 5 array on a mobo that doesn't support it (NForce 4, etc)
What you get:
1x RocketRAID 1640 PCI RAID card (in box)
2x SATA cables
1x MOLEX to SATA power adapter
4x Floppy Disks (1 for drivers, 3 for RAID management software)
I don't have the user's manual, but you shouldn't have a problem installing this card without it.
