My motherboard has a header that says SPDIF next to it. Is there something I assume there is something I can plug into there that will give me an S/PDIF output to be used with a set of Z-5500 speakers I hope to acquire.
Will this remove the need for a decent sound card? Surely then my motherboard sends the uncompressed digital data to the Z-5500 pod thingy which Dolbyfies it etc?
Please clarify this for me. And also, does the Z-5500 even have an input for S/PDIF? Thanks.

Well I found on the Gigabyte website what I need, but it seems very unlikely that I'll be able to get one locally.
For interest's sake though, if I were to find one of these and use the S/PDIF output of my motherboard and plug it into a Z-5500 control pod, would that negate the need for a decent sound card? Does it then just pass on the digital data, or does my crappy onboard sound still play a role?
PLEASE stop linking to Uncle Tom they just suck in everything!
Ok cool. What about a crappy sound card that has S/PDIF? Then it might not matter that it's crappy because it will still be the Z-5500 that does the hard work...
Thanks Sparhawk. I was about to give that number a ring but I emailed Sybaritic just to check and they have a generic S/PDIF riser which they assured me will work with my motherboard. Thanks for the help. Great that I won't have to spend an extra R500 on top of already expensive speakers.

Hehe - now I just need to find a second hand Z-5500 set to buy. What speakers are you running Postman?
Rectron sells them for arround R3500.00 including vat.
