SA 3G prices...

A few years back they (Australasia) were much cheaper than us but luckily competition has kicked-in and improved our prices. We would unfortunately never reach the user-density of Europe and the states and then there are the huge distances that have to be brigaded between us and the major servers elevating our per user costs. Considering all these factors we don’t have it so bad but there is always room for improvement. Now they want to introduce LTE because the first world is doing it. This is not necessary a good thing for the whole of the country: my present modem is not even running at its optimum speed and there is a drastic drop in speed at peak hours: so the wireless broadband suppliers should first get the present systems running at optimum level, 24 hours a day, before they try and launce a upgraded system in an effort to push prices up again. I would not mind to pay more for a 30 Mb/s download speed but I would be more than happy with a 2Mb/s download speed at the present price. Have anyone seen a 21 or 28 Mbps modem running at peak? Before they achieved this nationwide, 24/7, LTE is just “pie in the sky” that will push the price up for those few who would have limited access to it!

I confirmed with Vodacom that LTE has no additional cost and so I have also read on their site. I'm possitive the costs will be seen more in the LTE compatible devices though.
I opened a contratc with Vodacom a few days ago and with this contract I received the K4510-Z 3G modem. I was curious to see what this new modem was capable of so I went to Speedtest.net and acheived a decent download speed of 9.8Mbps and upload speed of 1.6 Mbps which is not bad at all for 3G.
R269 is a bit more than what us South Africans can get for 3gigs but then again, have you seen the price if you "top up" on contract? A massive R249 for 1gig if you run out of data before month end...! Err...
