Large-scale desertions at the army headquarters in Pretoria during the working day have resulted in drastic action – employees are locked in to prevent them from leaving the premises.

The rule came into effect this week, and will be enforced as long as the authorities feel it is necessary to drum into soldiers that official working hours have to be taken seriously.

According to the army, there is nothing controversial about the rule, and that it was definitely time to crack the whip.

The new regulation followed increasing complaints of a lack of staff in the office, especially on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

Employees have reportedly been abusing a long-standing rule in the army that allows soldiers who officially practise sport to leave with a “sport pass”. Most of the people who leave on a Wednesday do not take part in any kind of sport, it was established.

It's the same at some schools in my area. In some communities the work ethics among everyone is generally low and this has also spilled over to the teachers.

Not at my school though. We work like dogs here.

I think the space between "awb members" and the fact that the sentence wraps at that exact spot, on my browser at least, threw him of. Simple misunderstanding

When a 92 year old lady, living on a farm, is burned with a hot pan during a "robbery", you need to wonder what the real intension is and why they felt they had to hurt her this badly. Did they feel threatened and was outa bullets for the gun that they used to shoot her son with? I think it is simple, a hate towards white people. Around where I live (farmland) NO robbery goes without people being severly hurt and/or raped and the men kiled. This is a very sick country.

We'll only know how good our army is when we have to rely on them to get us out of crap. For now the army just burns tax payers money through exercises, sport, recreational festivities. Can anyone tell me what the army does to keep the troops busy? If they got nothing to do they will AWOL as with anyone else in the corporate environment.
