SA average peak internet speed: 8Mbps and counting

We getting a lot of these kinds of stats articles recently. Can someone explain what this figure means? Is this reflective of people having decent internet connections at work and they measure an average peak based on a very specific time of day? Is it a heavy push with HSDPA and people maybe doing a bit of Facebook on their cellphone but it bursts at a very high rate?

A 'peak' in my opinion means nothing. I have a 1Mbps line and have seen peaks of over 600Kb even though the theoretical max [for the line] is around 128Kb and the average, if I'm lucky,is around 80/90Kb.

Rather tell us about the highest sustainable speeds. Now that will be a different story.

Peak speed? Oh you mean those blissful few seconds when a download starts when the speed is unfettered until throttling/shaping measures kick into place?

Then you're on the wrong account. Change your account or your ISP.

These stats are always confusing. First of all, fixed line and mobile should be separated. Is this an average of what's available, an average of all the actual connections, or an average of all users actual on-line experience?

There is a difference between average ADSL speed and average internet speed.
