Hi,

I am from the UK orgionaly: You know in London you can get up to 5MB ADSL! And in the rest of the country, 2MB?

2MB from BT 27.99 P/M = R 335 odd per month: www.bt.com

Anyone who thinks 1 MB is fast, needs to get thier heads read! I say this because here in ZA, Telcom uses copier, in UK and most other 1st world countries use fibre!

Wrong. Telkom's backbone is almost entirely fibre.
Local leads are all copper - this is a requirement for ADSL...

In fact, Telkom uses fibre so frequently that many people are unable to get ADSL as it only works over copper. We have the most advanced telecoms infrastructure in Africa (I suppose that says about as much as one wants to).

Thing is - broadband in SA is not that bad - just the prices suck, *big* time. Sure, 512k is the fastest available atm.. but the same situation persisted in the UK just what, 3 years ago. Soon SA will have affordable broadband.. hopefully as affordable as the UK or Hong Kong.. who knows.

You can get VDSL to bridge the fibre problem...

It was designed with the idea of using fibre to get close to homes and then getting into the house with VDSL...

Cost was 30 quid for the line, 25 quid for the isp account.

its not 55 quid at all. you can get all in for about 17 quid

I dont think 192 is even available there in UK - last I saw on BTs website they were upgrading all their customers to 1 and 2 mbs lines and doing away with anything slower.

While other countries get free upgrades we get telkom'ed in the rear.

afaik 1mbps is their minimum speed now.

Yeah - but we've got 192 so take that BT et al!

you must remember we are in south africa, a 3rd world country. this is not england, i am not saying the amount we are paying is right but take into consideration where our country is. You cannot compare sa with england technology wise.

England gets the fast internet and we get the Gorgeous woman and good weather!

Maybe so - but with the profit Telkom turns there must be room for MASSIVE price improvement, 3rd world or not.. I think if people always say 'well we're 3rd world so dont expect much' then we will forever be that - 3rd world.
