We all have been on both sides of the coin concerning motoring journalists. The fact that most of us hate the proffesion is not liberating at all. Now, these guys who comment of politics equally as they do cars have chosen the Cars of the year 2009 in South Africa, and the absense of the Golf 6 GTi to me is amazing. I liek the car, never driven in one, but heard wonder stories. Were they only fanboy stories?:p

Here's the list:

Alfa Romeo MiTo 1.4i Turbo Petrol
Audi Q5 2.0 T S tronic • Chevrolet Cruze 1.8 LS
• Hyundai i20 1.6 GLS
• Suzuki Alto 1.0 Litre GLS
• Toyota Prius 1.8 ECVT Advanced
• Volkswagen Golf VI 1.4 TSI 90 kW Comfortline
Volvo XC60 3.0T Geartronic

Now I've added my own review on each, as I've read about all of these cars in some publication and only driven in one, but only looking at the cars and their interior is enough to put it off for the COTY contender...how did they choose this list?

The MiTo looks nice, drives nice, but compared to all Alfa's it has the crappiest plasticky interior ever, and an Alfa wit no leather as standard is an Italian sin by all mannerisms!:erm: My money is on either the Alfa, being purely biased or the Audi, at least there is one quality car in there...;)

COTY list cars that will appeal to every type of person, so no person will agree on all of them.
Like the VW is there over the GTI cos of the TSI - 90kW from a 1.4L while the GTI VI is the same as the V except a facelift. I like this car but expensive.
But my money is on the i20, cos of bang for your buck.
I still feel though that motoring journalist should focus on the long term prospect of the car and rate them from there.
That means looking at reliability, maintenance, resale if u had to sell, customer service... and then rate them.

My money's on the MiTo or the Golf VI. Small, high-power engines are back in fashion :)

I think the Golf VI 1.4l 90Kw model, is far more an achievement that needs to be celebrated than the GTi.

In fact 1.4 TSi, and the Audi Q5 2.0T, are my picks for the serious contenders, with maybe the i20, sneaking in becuase of the economy and all.

and I think the Defender should be on the COTY every year, since it's only the longest running production vehicle out there ;)

Goloph FTW - small capacity forced-induction engines is where it's at until either hybrids or alternatively fuelled cars get with the programme.

I think all the competitors have to be launched during the preceding year, sadly no Honda this year then.
