'SA could face recession'

Johannesburg - There is a "very real" risk that South African could face an economic recession as a result of the current electricity crisis, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) said on Wednesday.

Things don't look too rosy, do they?

To only attribute it to the electricity crisis isn't totally correct. There is an overall slowdown in the global economy...the electricity crisis exacerbates it!

My thoughts are that this crisis of ours will prevent a recovery. There in lies the danger.

Am I missing your [/sarcasm] quotes somewhere

Thought it was too obvious.

well with the global economy in a poopy state a SA recession won't be a surprise ...

The gravy train shall continue, no matter what! For great justice!!!!!!1

ANC's plan for SA:

Destroy the economy.
?????
Profit!

I am never optimistic nor pessimistic, I am always realistic

I think the energy crisis is a huge challenge to SA as a nation , but it is manageable with efforts from everyone.

USA is nearing a recession , I think they are closer to it than us.
Every country will always face new problems or new challenges .

It is always about how ways are found to solve them...

Don't be fooled by the anti-US rhetoric you hear. If the USA enters a recession a depression will follow in SA shortly. The rest of the world
is dependent on the US, if their market slows down the people
who'll do most of the suffering won't be the Americans.

Why do you think I am anti -US ?

I am not anti-US, Yes I have fought a battle with a US company before , But I am not anti-US. in fact I adore
their values of freedom and democracy and many other innovations that shape our way of life today.

That does not change the fact that US is in real danger of possible economy recession due to its sub-prime crisis. if it happens (I hope not) it will affect the entire world , and particularly its trading partners(nations ).

Talk about an understatement

:D

Allow the poet to tell it like it is.

THE SADIM TOUCH

What future stalks this "rainbow nation"
when all hope flees in contemplation
of the State's self serving stance,
the seed of total degradation?
King Midas bore a cruel curse
but our peoples suffer one far worse,
burdened by a gang of fools
whoes magic gift acts in reverse.
Without conscience, care or wit
they touch, and touched,
.....all turns to ****.

That's about the size of it.

we've had 33 quarters of consecutive growth and in that period the US has been in recession at least once. furthermore this time round the economies of europe, brazil, india, russia and china are in good enough shape to lessen the blow of the US in recession.

Where's all the money going then

South Africa is classified as an emerging/developing market country. These across the board have also been hit. Of course, the SA specific issues like zuma and the power crisis have put the rand under more pressure than its peers. There is also the perverse problem we always face at times like this. Our sophisticated financial system means that we (or more correctly the rand) is used to hedge other exposures international players can’t easily get out of. Which adds further pressure on the rand.

Which exposures are these? I can understand the commodities/rand hedge and possibly treasury departments hedging based on their risk management, but are there any specific instruments where the rand is used as a useful hedge?
