SA could get 12 nuclear power plants

French nuclear giant Areva said on Thursday it was ready to build up to 12 next-generation power plants in South Africa, where massive electricity shortages shut down the key mining industry this month.

Areva said that in addition to an earlier plan to build two nuclear power plants in South Africa, announced earlier this month, it would now offer 10 more of its third generation systems through to 2025.

These would be built in partnership with construction and communication conglomerate Bouygues and electricity giant EDF of France, alongside South African engineering firm Aveng - the same companies involved in the first two.

Areva said it was offering South Africa "a total partnership, covering the construction of EPR (third-generation) reactors and joint development of the South African nuclear industry".

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is due to visit South Africa on 26-27 February and will be accompanied, among others, by the head of Areva, Anne Lauvergeon.

South Africa, the continent's strongest economy, has been beset by power shortages in recent years as demand outpaced supply, with the problem hitting crisis proportions earlier this month as cuts forced the shutdown of the country's mining sector.

The government has been under fierce pressure because a 1998 white paper had warned that "timely steps will have to be taken to ensure that demand does not exceed available supply".

If everybody works together then all will go well - and leave the politicians out of this for once.

but knowing them, I won't be surprised if they will try to enrich themselves once more... :mad:
 
We can expect the budget for these to be "revised" a few times during the run of the project, should they eventually do it.

Maybe we can use them as fuel, don't they use enriched uranium for nuclear plants, who knows it might work with politicians as well
 
They should really make them an offer along the lines of "If the first one is finished within 2 years we'll pay double for it".
 
12, i totally hope they do that and phase outthe coal ones, should make for a very clean electrical system. if nothing else, wonder where we will put all the waste.

Nuke plants are good for cutting CO2 emissions and we will not get weather dependent supply interruptions like 'wet coal problems ' or at least they can not use the excuse:), yet they are very expensive to build (I read), do not know if Eskom can afford the Capex for 12 plants.without massive price hikes.

French nuke technology has a proven track record in SA (Koeberg),good head start for France.

I just can not remember who the other bidder is .... .
