Great! So now they can be hacked and we can be spied upon as well!

Sorry, I don't want one of your stupid STB's!

This would be for the multiple subsidised units, in order to bring connectivity to the masses.

Intentions are noble, but it does seem very Orwellian.

I would have thought an ethernet cable rather than USB to save price and offer choice.

This article http://www.techcentral.co.za/govt-issues-rfp-for-digital-tv/33893/ states the return path is optional - who's right?

I think the return path requirement is stupid, as they still have to buy a separate external modem and separate bandwidth. What's the point? The fully functional webbox type devices from Vodacom/mtn are the same prices as modems, and it's a better tool for the job.

Great, I think this digital migration in terrestrial transmission will truly struggle to become succesfull. Sentech/SABC's Vivid digital satellite platform was never popular. The decoders remained very expensive, hard to come by and were just poorly marketed. They removed Etv in 2008. Now again the DOC wants to keep everything im their own hands. Have only one local manufacturer produce them at way too high prices. The Freeview receivers in the UK are from all kind of makes, some with HD, and with hard drives or DVD recorders. And the DVB-T2 ones that also work here are there available from 29 quit upwards. Cheaper ones might just be DVB-T. Our Gov wants to spend R2.7 Billion, already up from R2.4 Billion 3 months ago, to subsidise the set top boxes for the poor. Absolutely ludicrous !

It appears that DoC is going to source them from many manufacturers, not just one. And from the little information we've been able to see, it's standard DVB-T2 that they're going for.

Let's hope they don't change their minds.
