Hi

SA Digital Villages is coming to our complex. Does anyone have any experience with them? I would like to use it for gaming. What is the average ping on their network?

I am Looking at the Gold package 10Mb 50GB cap.

"Shaped synchronous
broadband fibre
internet access"

Regards

Hey there.

I have 2mb uncapped. Awesome line, nothing more I can add. They are a bit on the expensive side though.

Thanks for the feedback, what about shaping or throttling?

On a 2mb line you should be getting constant +- 230kbps?

On the 2mb I get a constant 230 - 250 kb/s and as far as I'm concerned it's unshaped. Obviously torrents and such are shaped, but I rarely use torrents.

Local content is blazing fast while international sits at an average of 230kb/s. Seems there's no overhead like you're find with ADSL. So far pretty happy with it, the only thing, as mentioned, is the price.

I would have preferred using my own ISP like you can with other fibre providers though, decoupling that portion and paying only for the line, I might actually consider going with higher speeds if that was the case. Wouldn't mind paying for a 100mb line with a capped ISP like Afrihost or Web Africa.

I also rarely use torrents, mostly want the speed for streaming and steam downloads.
I'm going for the 4Mbps Uncapped, to be honest my current ADSL uncapped gives me 400KB/s all day everyday, so it would have been nice to experience 10Mbps Uncapped but SADV only offer 10Mbps as an expensive capped account.

Do you know if you get you're own public IP on your router or if the NAT you to a private IP?

As far as I can see it works much like ADSL, so you have a public IP.

There is a caveat though. The Mikrotik router is locked by them. So you're not able to add static routes/NAT yourself.

The solution is to buy a router you can control and just plug it in there with your own IP range. This is bothering me right now because on my Roku the DNS resolves to the public DNS of Google, and Unotelly doesn't kick in.

Yeah I'm definitely going to hookup my own router, I also use UnoTelly and I would prefer not to manually set all my devices DNS settings

Does anyone know what the Contention Ratio on their lines?10:1?
SA Digital Rates

SA-Digital-Villages are really expensive for the services they are offering. Well compared to what I am use too - Greenscom

I constantly have download speeds of 2Mbps - 3Mpbs at the moment.

Has anyone set their Netflix/Alternative up with SADV's router etc?

I'd like to try, but don't know if it'll work because their routers are locked.

If anyone can help set mine up, I've a couple beers in my fridge!

Old post I know, have had these clowns for about 2 months now and not impressed at all, my DSL is more stable, in the last week alone the fibre has done off 4 times for couple hours, their support is non-existent and for the price you pay it's not worth it at all.

I use Netflix and Hulu, DNS details had to be entered on my PC, I must say though that I feel the their streaming capability isn't all that great, I had less buffering time on my DSL.

I have! have to have PC on hand to update your IP with unotelly but it is great!

I've had them for a grand total of 1 week.

Im on the 4mb uncapped option.

So far so good, i managed to do all my updates etc in the first 48-72 hours, a grand total of around 40-50 Gigs.

My only issue is streaming. Or even just watching videos on facebook etc. They buffer quite a bit, which kills me.

Does anyone know if they have a Fair Usage Policy? hey aren't coming back to me and i can't find anything on their site.

Thanks
D

Hey,

Which complex do you stay in?

I'm moving into Greenstone Crest next month and SADV's prices are no looking very attractive. MTN Fibre has coverage there so I've approached them about installation to the complex and I also see there's a Telkom MSAN right by the entrance of the complex, so I'm hoping I can either get Fibre or VDSL at the apartment.

I stay in greenstone ridge.
I can't comment on GreenstoneCrest, but in Greenstone Ridge we only have SADV.
Telkom hasn't installed lines and no other supplier has rights to lay fibre in the complex :(

I suspect it's the same situation at Greenstone Crest. How did you find out that no other supplier has rights to lay fibre in the complex?

Apparently the fibre will be open to other providers after 6 months, though you can't take my word for it :D
