SA drivers and indicators

95% of our population is too thick to even think never mind drive.

South Africans are thick. I'm always seeing gleaming Beamers at 120km/h on the N1 do this over and over and over. Last week on the R21 with everyone moving around 120 I saw this one guy in a bakkie with mirrors mounted on the side do the same thing. I tend to see guys driving company cars and Beamers the one's really more prone to not just flick the indicator. So i keep a nice following distance cos I don't want to be inspiration for Final Destination 6. I just feel unnatural not indicating TBH.

We all know that taxis would crop up at the top of every South Africa drivers ''hate'' list, but I find it pointless to complain anymore as, a) they won't change & b) government/traffic authorities will do nothing to ensure they change their on-the-road behaviour.

I disagree!

I always see taxi's pulled over by the coppers... Always!!

Maybe it's just a Cape Town thing.

Drivers must be alert all time. I only use Hazard when stopping. Indicators is for noobs.

thats exactly the crappy attitude normal drivers have adopted. now its a free for all and the authorities are powerless to stop it.

the indicator lever is too far and i heard rumours saying if you use indicators too much it drains the battery.

We have horrible drivers in SA. Friend of the family from the UK is a truck driver for a living, he was totally freaked the first time he drove in SA.

Actually SA is not that bad.

Try driving in Mauritius.

Every time I take friends there, by the time I have driven from the airport to my parents' house, they are looking even paler than normal :D

That's why all cars comes equipped with an ingenious device called an alternator.

alternator does not work well in the highveld region. Actually some guy now on focus st just changed lanes without indicating.

So it seems Ford and BMW are highly affected.

Hehe, got you looking now. Once you start noticing it you realise how prevalent it is.

Oh don't worry, on a stretch of road I use in the morning I stay at least 5-6 car lengths behind any taxi in front of me, because those hazards come on and BOOM, you have to stomp on those brakes son.

As a cyclist you are heavily dependent on motorist using their indicators. It is very hard to know what a car is going to do if they do not use their indicators. If I can do the effort of indicating my turns using my arm then the least they can do is to flick a lever.

It's not even that much effort - if your hands are in the proper position on the steering wheel (not on top like a budgie on a perch) you just have to move one finger to reach the stalk.

Oh the irony if you get taken out by an Opel..
