Fracking viability study launched in South Africa

Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor has announced that government has commissioned the Strategic Environmental Assessment of Shale Gas Development.

Short term - brilliant concept.
Long term - the biggest environmental disaster this continent has ever seen.
If you really think the relevant companies will comply with all the environmental regulations - you are dead wrong.

This makes interesting reading. If fracking goes ahead it will become a nightmare when you add mining related tremors and quakes into the equation.

Lots of emotions attached to this.

People are so sure they know exactly what is going to happen. They are happy to drive cars that use fuel from Nigeria, Saudi and every other war zone AND they are happy to have their lights turn on because of coal and diesel... however fracking is somehow the end of the world.

Thankfully no fracking will take place for a while due to greedy government requirements (mainly equity), and more importantly low low oil prices making it impractical.

I'm happier to leave it in the Karoo for our future generations to decide on, rather than short term benefits that will pollute both our water table, and delicate biosphere.
