SA internet NOOb Help please oh clever ones!!!

Hi

I moved from UK to SA, in UK I had always on broadband downloading stuff at about 600kbps etc.

I am also a gaming fanatic - playing Lineage 2 online in the UK until my eyes bled.

Now I am a little confused with the South African system, I know they cap your bandwidth which sucks, and I know some services are faster than others.

I would like to know what the easiest fastest way is to get connected to the information super highway at a good speed and good price so I can continue downloading and playing games...

I do not consider telkom an option as they have extremely poor customer service and told me it will take about 2 months to install fibre optics broadband which I can't wait for!!

If you are lucky to be in a Screamer coverage area then there is no question that they supply the best gaming latency as they seem to concentrate on this.
Their service is also outstanding and their have been reports of them doing installations 2 days after receiving the applications
 
Telkom is the only way to go. You're gonna have to wait the 2 months for your line.m (adsl not wireless)

Can you back that up with some figures please?

Wireless is bad when it comes to latency, I cannot see it beating fixed line adsl.
 
Well you say u like gaming as well as downloading which is kinda high up in die requirement list. It all depends what ur budget looks like really. If ur going all out then get a 4Mb/s ADSL line from Telkom (if u start the whole thing froms scratch might take about 1-2 weeks, shorter if u have an existing line) and sign up for Uncapped Express from either provider - Axxess, Openweb, etc. Do a bit of reading / comparing to find the one u like.
On the flipside total basic intro package into the internet would probly be something like Neotel Basic or Telkom DO 1 Package.

If latency is important for the gaming you might want to look at unshaped bandwidth. So far one of the cheapest I've come across for that is First National Bank's Connect - https://www.fnbconnect.co.za/ - at r69 per GB.

Unfortunately I've not been able to try them myself as they require an ID number to create the login and I dont have one of those.

Bleh - im gonna go for not so hot.... been using them on and off as 'n backup when my other accounts get capped but overall its a mission... latencies are pretty up to &*() somtimes and general browsing requires a few refreshes to skip the cannot access page message. Other than that yea, not bad.
 
This is what you'll need tn pay:
R425 for 4mbit line
R125 for phone line
R999 foi Axxes Fibre Uncapped

Then you can download almost unlimited at 500kbps. Forget international gaming with fps's. Just local.

Fair enough - like I mentioned I've not been able to try them personally so I'll defer to those who have. :)

No worries - just saying that ive been there and i dont think ill be topping up later on... i dont know, they promise unshaped all the time but its sometimes such a hassle to even open a page! Other than that ye, i have WoW'ed on this acc with not BAD latency but NOT good either. Raiding a big no no.

Maybe before WiMAX but I get zero packet loss

Ping statistics for 74.125.77.106:
