A 64-year-old South African businessman was arrested on a terrorism charge on Saturday for allegedly threatening the UK government, police minister Nathi Mthethwa said.
He was apprehended at 10:30am in Hartbeespoort in the North West.
The arrest follows an intensive six-month investigation by South African and British police as well as the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
“The suspect repeatedly through letters and e-mails demanded an amount of USD 4-million in exchange for not deploying a biological agent within the borders of the United Kingdom,” said Mthethwa.
“This biological agent, if deployed, would have caused the destruction of property and resulted in major economic loss.”
Police said this was regarded as a “very serious threat” against the UK.
It is alleged that a similar threat was also made against the United State.
“Intensive and highly complicated multi-disciplinary investigations and the subsequent take-down operation this morning involved the application of specialised components and methodologies of the SA Police Service,” said Mthethwa.
“The successful termination of this operation once again illustrates that the SAPS has the capacity and expertise to deal with major crimes and international counter terrorism issues.”
The succes was an indication of South Africa's committment to work with other governments, he said.
The man was due to appear in court on Monday.
The National Prosecuting Authority was still deciding which court that would take place in.
South African police say they have arrested a man accused of threatening to unleash biological weapons on Britain and the United States. In a statement Saturday, police said a six-month terror investigation by South African, British and U.S. officials culminated with the man's arrest Saturday morning in northwestern South Africa. Police spokeswoman Sally de Beer says his name will not be released until a Johannesburg court appearance Monday.
