Tunisian doctors start arriving in SA

JOHANNESBURG: Tunisia is the latest country to lend its medical expertise to our healthcare system.

Yesterday, 15 Tunisian doctors landed at OR Tambo International Airport after a 15-hour flight.

They are the first group of an expected 258 doctors who have been recruited as part of a co-operation agreement on health signed between the two countries in 2004.

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang said the process to assign the doctors to specific posts was under way. The Tunisian doctors would be placed mainly in underprivileged areas.

Fourteen of the doctors will be placed in the rural Eastern Cape, while one will be placed in the Free State.

General practitioner Mohammed Nael Sahli, deployed in Bloemfontein, said he was delighted to be here.

"While waiting to come here, I did an internet search of the area and the hospital. Now I just need to see it myself." - Own Correspondent
