Johannesburg – IOC executive board member Sam Ramsamy says South Africa will bid to host either the 2024 or 2028 Olympics.

Ramsamy, the first president of South Africa's united Olympic committee, tells The Associated Press the bid is “definitely coming.”

Ramsamy says he will talk to the government about a bid after the national elections in April or May. South Africa considered bidding for the 2020 Games after successfully hosting the 2010

World Cup, but the government backed off to focus on pressing social issues.

IOC President Thomas Bach said this week in South Africa that an African bid would enjoy “great sympathy” with IOC members. It is the only continent that hasn't been awarded the games.

Agg, Olympics couldn't be held in Joburg and Cape Town's weather in October is just too unpredictable meaning it would go to Durban. Not that I have anything against Durban but it isn't the best city in the country (3rd maybe).

Why would you say that?...

Should Durban host the games, we already have the Olympic class main stadium, we have an Olympic class swimming pool and diving pool, etc etc.. the stuff may need to be "renovated" but it doesn't need to all be built from scratch. Also it would be by far the most compact games ever, since it will pretty much all happen in the Kings Park sporting precinct.

I personally would rather have Durban as a showcase for SA than JHB... CPT the weather is a bit too unpredictable plus the games would have to spread out massively.
 
Why wont they change the month that the event is supposed to be hosted in to make sure it coincides with the best weather months for the the host city?

Durban is the most neglected city in South Africa, the only city the ANC really care about is Johannesburg

I am fairly certain that isn't any financial benefits from hosting the Olympics...

If you want to host an event like the Olympics you are going to host it in an impressive city. Cape Town is impressive, Joburg is big and brutish but also impressive in some way. Durban doesn't really have any excitement to it. It's just a coastal city with a good beachfront. Not to say it doesn't have all of the facilities. They could canoe on the duzi, marathon swim in one of the dams, Moses Mabhida, it has everything, except the X factor.

I beg to differ the Europeans delegates who visited Durban seem to prefer Durban over Jo'burg and Cape Town for whatever reason and as I seem to remember that FIFA wanted the opening ceremony for the world cup to take place in Durban.

Oh so you are calling a stadium that has direct access to the beach (no more than 500m away), and breathtaking sea views to not be an X Factor....

The stadium is incredible, the city as a whole is a little bit less impressive.

How so though?

I obviously tend to disagree, every overseas visitor I've hosted has raved about the city, its people and its geography.
 
Well it has to be at sea level, so either Durban or CPT. CPT doesn't have space for this so its got to be Durban.

I've got limited enthusiasm for this though...with all the infrastructure needed & inevitable corruption and tenderpreneurs its going to cost us a fortune.

All the construction will create jobs and stimulate our economy, the way things look, looks like our economy needs us to host major sporting events to grow
