The Chinese make stuff to order. And as long as there's a market for cheap, they'll manufacture cheap as well....

its not just the cheap plastic crap, although some it it is really worthwhile. I go to Chinatown in Ottery at least once a month to stock up on all sorts of stuff. Saturday I bought a large "cheap plastic" bath for my dog at half the price I would get it at anywhere else. And I also go their for noodles and Chinese spices which is hard to get anywhere else... Its not only the cheap trinkets :)

They are not paid, they get a bowl of rice a day. pfft!

It is hurting our clothing industry.
 
Call me an Utopian but the Chinese with their "live in their own store, never spending a cent of money on seeking any more pleasure than bowl of noodles" type lifestyle and "work ethic" (money worship) is not something I want to see exported into my culture. There's more to life than saving money and slaving.

Three words - HYDRAULIC HOLE DIGGER - It's a hydraulic chassis punch. It costs R 1 195, retail, and it lets you punch holes into 3.2mm steel. So why is this significant? Because a German pump would probably go for R 6 000, a head for R 6 000, and each punch for an average of R 1 000, or R 19 000 total. Now if you're running an established business that punched 100 holes a day, go for the German one, it'll serve you well for 20 years, and you'll get kits to refurb it after that. But If you're a small business that has better things to do with R 19 000, or a business that only punches 100 holes a year, you're better of with the Chinese one.

Adendorff has dozens of things like this. Panel saws that let you make kitchens, tyre balancers that let you open a tyre shop, hand tools, air tools, etc, etc. They allow small business to get off the ground, and they're welcome here as far as I'm concerned.

By the way, I've got one of those chassis punches, and it's been abused. It's punched through 2 layers of Telkom enclosure (2mm stainless I think), punched hundreds of holes in steel and it's still going strong. For what I paid, I can't complain.

Great shop that for food you cannot find elsewhere. Spent R100 there and walked out with two plastic bags full of stuff. Oh and that chinese rice wine they have behind the counter is good stuff! (Not to be confused with the cooking rice wine they also sell)

Maybe if your families total income was R3000 a month including grants you would also be buying the cheap stuff!
 
The reason that our industries are not competitave is that the Chineese workers, in general, value their jobs, whereas our wekkas have this whole entitlement thing going on and NO work ethic.

An example of wat will happen here if we are not careful is how the Poms priced themselves out of the market with their "we demand" unions in the 70s. There are virtually none of the industries that helped make Britian great. look what has happened to their indigenous tribes living in their housing estates.
 
Yup Britain used to have thriving industries up until the early 80's, then slowly but surely they all vanished, now they barely make anything. They import 90% of their products, SA looks like it is going the same way, also those Chinese products can really be a diamond in the rough or in some cases rubbish, though it is always fun to go and haggle with them.
 
Is nobody concerned about the hundreds of thousands of undocumented Chinese nationals now living in SA?
These cunning migrants have over the last 10 years, been quietly acquiring small shops in every single dorp in SA.
They have purposefully kept under the radar, breeding like flies. Just go to any Chinese shop and witness all the little kids and babies in the back or behind the counter.
They know the weakness of our immigration Act is that if they give birth to a child here, they automatically get residency as parents.
The Chinese have stealthfully infiltrated every sector of our society while we as citizens fight among one another.

Now that they have sufficient numbers for our politicians to take notice, they are raising their heads and voices and beginning to be political about everything they do.
Chinatown is evidence of them assuming greater control over our economy.

In ten years time this country will be overrun with Chinese nationals who don't give a damn about human rights, workers rights, etc.
Eventually they will compete in every level of business and South African owned companies will close and workers will lose their jobs.
Cosatu will continue to be lead by the nose of the ANC and remain mute on the subject.

Chinese only employ Chinese in positions that matter. The rest of the workers are exploited for peanuts, or locked in sweat shops up to 18 hours a day.
China is over-populated and are actively deploying Chinese citizens with big government loans and emigration assistance to places like SA to set up shop to create trade
and to buy influence with foreign people. The average Chinese national would never have the kind of money to bring a family out here to set up a shop.
All of this is sponsored by the Chinese government., and it's a secret.

I say: Send them all packing back to China before it's too late.
Nothing good can come of their extended presence here!
They are all bloody Chinese government agents!

If the locals think they have issues with Somalians, Nigerians and other Africans, wait till the yellow man starts calling the shots.

There is a Chinatown near us and the place is packed with people. There is also a "square" where some chinese people sell their food and you can get TEA EEGS (that's how they spell it) from them and these eggs are black inside from what I saw.
