I have been trying to get some advice re. passport applications in SA.
Basically the home affairs dept. don't have a clue as to their own procedures!
Their website provides incomplete and not out-of-date info.
Please add any facts based on your experience and reality - perhaps we might end up with a process manual that we could donate to the Dept. of Home Affairs.

Another question - I have lost my passport which expired a few months ago. What do I (re)apply for - and what are the associated costs and time period.

FACTS:
1. If you have a passport this does not necessarily provide you with assurance re. criminal judgements etc. You will need to obtain a police clearance certificate seperately. This takes anything from 6-8 weeks. You will need to apply at a police station after which your prints and taken - submitted to Pretoria where they will issue.

Print this form out http://www.home-affairs.gov.za/forms.asp?topic=travel
(BI-73)
Fill it in in black pen.

Take your ID and colour photos (at least 2, have a few more in case they get lost)

Stand in a queue in home affairs

Stand in a queue for fingerprints and to pay. (R190 according to http://www.services.gov.za/Services...spoort of ’n reisdokument.aspx?Language=en-ZA)

Track the progress of your application online

Collect when ready.

It wasn't a difficult process for me, the only annoying thing was the long queues.

R190.00 is now R380.00 for lost/expired passports as I have been told by HADept.
Confirmation anyone?

inflation?
sounds a bit suspect... what difference does it make if its expired? i think some one has a new business venture at home affairs

+1

was there 2 weeks ago, don't fall for the hawkers outside that charge you r150-250 for speeding it up, as we were in and out in less than 30min

there is a higher fee, if this is a replacement passport, unsure the exact amount, but yes it was above 300

Yea, R190 for a regular passport (If it is your first passport or your old one has expired.)
Mine took about 2 months, but it should be quicker because they were transferring onto the new passport system. Which I now have :)

Don't bother checking online. They don't update their statuses online. If it's urgent, phone then to check if it has been couriered to your local home affairs yet.

O yea, call them, its much better as kingmonty said. They will tell you were exactly it is. Eg in prining etc.

Mine is being dispatched from printers to office of application!

Home Affairs is piloting a new system in some offices that will cut the application and completion time of passports to a minimum.

You will no longer be required to fill in any form of paperwork when applying for a passport. You need to go to the office with your green bar-coded ID book as proof of identity. When you get to the front of the queue the official will take your picture using a webcam, you will sign electronically and they will scan your fingerprints. The official will then "live capture" your details and send the completed application to DHA Head Office. Once verified at Head Office it will be sent to the printers to be completed. Some passports are going through the entire process in less than 1 week. These passports are the new spec passports with the new security features.

It does cost R190 if you renew your expired passport. R380 is the cost to replace a lost or stolen passport due to the fact that they need to block the lost passport number.

If you have any other questions about the process or you want to check the progress of your passport, ID or certificate, call the DHA call centre on 0800 60 11 90.

.

Good Grief! Blocking the passport must be a process of note!
(Do they reprint the old one and then tear it up or burn it )

To avoid dealing with Home Affairs, I time it so that I make the application abroad.
Did my last passport (Jumbo one - old one ran out of blank pages 3 years before the expiry date) and ID book applications at the embassy in Shanghai - much better experience than back in SA.

I got my Saffer passport renewed in London at the SA house. They said i will have it within 4 months. Haha what a joke. 18 months later I got it lol

Getting a new passport recently was no hassle. Printed the forms off the web, got passport photos, took form plus photos, ID and R200 to Randburg Home Affairs, had fingerprints done there. The process took about 20 min. Passport was ready in about 6 weeks, and I was SMSed. Collecting it took under 5 minutes.

+1.. this sounds right. Only thing I would add is to take a photocopy of your ID with. They usually ask for that.
