I.e. most South Africans prefer a mixed market economy.
There isn't much ideology in how South Africans vote, so they will not struggle because they are a communists, if that was the case, that Purple Cow capitalists party would have performed much better, they will struggle because they don't have much commitment in what they are doing, the half hearted attempt to have one foot in the ANC and one foot outside will be their downfall.

I could agree with the rest of your post. But my question is, if ideology doesn't play some role... What does, in your opinion...?
The lure of FREE STUFF - like SASSA grants, free houses, free education, free medical care, food parcels, t-shirts, blankets & KFC Streetwise 2 vouchers, perhaps?

Anything EXCEPT employment opportunities where you actually have to WORK for a living, unless it's as a government cadre / tenderpreneur - then you work REALLY hard to bring in the filthy lucre & ill-gotten gains, so you can afford all the Western trappings of wealth, luxury & excess that the sheeple seem to worhip & look up to you, whilst they continue to live in abject poverty & squalor...

I am not saying ideology doesn't play a role in voters choices, what I am saying is that it's role is not as big as some people tend to think.

Populism plays a much bigger role, especially for parties that are newly launched, saying what people wanted to hear at the time is what launched parties like PA and ActionSA for example, but that alone isn't sustainable, that is why populist parties like the EFF make a big splash and fizzle out and stagnate after some time.

So a good balance of ideology, populism, tribalism is what our politics is all about.
