In current SA employment situation they do not have any value and graduate unemployment is increasing since there are no industries to support them.Have no value?
BAs and political degrees have value, just not in your eyes.
With your suggestion, you end up having kids studying something they have zero passion for simply because it's free.
A qualification is a qualification. The talk of BAs being useless implies those students just sit and do nothing for 3 years and then get the qualification.
You are twisting my words, they work for their degree and get qualification except there is no jobs for that degree.
I interact with quite a few students and have kids of my own, nobody looks at passion any more.
If you are smart you chose direction that will provide you edge and employability and that has nothing to do with passion.
Those that chose BA's and political degrees are ones that:
- do not qualify for something of more value
- do not think 10 years in advance
- can study for free and chose whatever they can get
We should introduce entrance exams like other countries.
If you study medicine it would consist of following:
Your matric mark represents 40% of your total.
English exam 20% of your total.
Biology exam 20% of your total.
Physics/chemistry exam 20% of your total.
Add all that and create ranking list for lets say 800 places.
First 400 paid education and accommodation.
400-600 paid education.
600-800 have to pay all.
At the end of each year evaluate. So if somebody did badly on entrance exam but first year is fantastic then he gets stuff for free and ones that went down a bit lose some of financing.
