SA getting ready to miss digital TV deadline

South Africa is preparing to miss the International Telecommunications Union deadline for migrating from analogue to digital broadcasting by co-operating with Botswana.

...... but is the DStv box not designed and manufactured in SA?? And surely a tuner/decoder/recorder and STB is relatively the same kind of device, just for different systems?

most OVHD boxes are manufactured here, they could be used. However the chip is imported from xxxxx place.

Have we got the tech to mass produce the chip? no
have we got the people with the brain power to create the tech? probably
but it could not compete with the cost pricing of the internationally produced item. And said companies (there are not many of them) are not likely to be bbee, let alone bbbee, and that too could be used as a delay tactic...
