SA prisons install cellphone detectors

They will never stop prisoners from using cellphones as long as prisoners have no viable alternatives.

They should put the StingRay cellphone snooping devices in prisons, then just record and monitor all cellphone traffic. This way they can either find people using and smuggling in the cellphones, or let the transgressions slide to be able to gather more important information from the call itself (planned escapes, illegal activities on the outside etc).

Guards and visitors would need to consent to it though, since technically their phones would be connecting to the StingRay as well. But I'm pretty sure that since the prisoners shouldn't have the cellphones anyway, they don't need to give their consent.

how about that signal jammer they used in Parliament a few months ago, that should help, CO's can use landlines...

I don't understand. Are the prisoners breaking out to go spend Xmas with friends and family, or are they breaking out for good? Do they normally return after the festive season?

Don't know but sounds complicated if the officers are allowed to have personal cellphones in the prison yards. How to tell an officer's phone from an illegal one, unless no-one is allowed to have a mobile beyond certain points. Never been to prison so ...

Will ask OP
