SA road deaths vs the world mapped interactively

We actually have a well developed (if badly maintained) road network here. Would love to see the ratio in relation to cars on the road instead of in relation to the number of people...

The site oversimplifies the issue. What do the people die from? How many are pedestrians who got run over whilst walking under the influence? In other words how many are driver error? From the ones caused by driver error, how many were taxis? Etc....
 
Niue should really be taken off that list. An island nation loses a single citizen in a road accident and they shoot to the top of the list! I would rather drive in Niue than in the Dominican Republic.
 
What I would love is for the department of transport to analyse in depth all road accidents over a decade and identify problem roads, intersections, turns and what makes them so and then fix the engineering fault or driver behaviours there.

End result...they'd have to fix all of them. Part of the problem is that the people putting up the signs etc clearly don't have a drivers license so you get fun things like a stop sign with yield line markings etc.
 
How can speed enforcement be 3/10 and drunk driving 2/10 ?

On pretty much any given Thursday, Friday and Saturday going to ships I'll pass traps everywhere - and in the evening I can pinpoint where the road blocks are because there are so many here.

That just your spot in paradise. Most of GP the speed cops do exactly 2 things:
1) pull over ridiculously overloaded trucks from the N1
2) speed enforcement

They literally do nothing else. I have seen maybe 1 roadblock in the last year and that was during the day...mostly pulling over vehicles of dubious merit.

Especially the chop sitting at the bottom of the dip at Botha (or flying saucer?)...always causes congestion & occasionally an accident too (people nailing the brakes in peak traffic to avoid fines).

There is one tiny group of speedcops actually being useful though...there is a crowd on motorbikes that camps at the N1/N4 interchange during rush hour for a casual chat. They don't actually do anything but people behave better if they're there.
 
SA driver behaviour is the reason for much of the death toll for sure. Most of it is down to awareness of other traffic, compliance with simple traffic flow principles and simple courtesy.

Driving in Western Europe is a real eye-opener. Even with their far narrower roads and at times very slippery road conditions it is plain to see that our Taxis are only a part of problem.

Someone once told me that the government will never release the breakdown of road deaths by "reason", cos it would highlight just how many people die due to taxis (and busses) and alcohol.
This would result in a huge problem since
(a) our government-run public transport system could never cope with the volume of people if you take taxis and private busses out of the equation
(b) the alcohol industry would suffer in time if drunk driving was consistently being shamed with real numbers in public, and the economic impact would be too large.

Conspiracy Theory? A little bit, but it certainly is food for thought
