The electricity supply outlook for the next six days is bleak with a paper thin margin on Friday and a supply deficit from Saturday to Wednesday. This means load shedding is virtualy a given from Saturday until Wednesday.

Eskom’s system status bulletin released on Thursday night shows that electricity supply is expected to exceed demand by a mere 73MW. That means that unless remand is reduced, any issue that limits performance at even one of Eskom’s generation units may necessitate load shedding.

From Saturday to Wednesday the demand is expected to outstrip supply every day. From Monday to Wednesday the deficit is more than 1 000MW per day, reaching a peak of 1 567MW on Wednesday.

The unplanned outages have been reduced to 7 217MW on Thursday, down from an unprecendented 10 515MW on Monday. Planned outages for maintenance stood at 3 282MW on Thursday.

I really don't understand this whole thing. They know that demand will outweigh supply tomorrow, so why are we not shedding a load today to avoid shedding tomorrow/Sunday etc?

See I'm even confusing myself.

What I meant was - Their "research" shows that we will not have enough supply for tomorrow (Saturday) to meet demand. So why aren't they load shedding today (even for a couple hours) to ensure that they do not have to shed tomorrow.

It doesn't work that way. Load shedding now will make no difference tomorrow. You have to load shed when the demand is high because that's when demand exceeds capability of the system.

Why does the expected capacity drop on a Saturday and a Sunday? Do some of the stations go off line over the weekend?

Relax comrades. The comrades at ESKOM know what they're doing. Let them have time to think. Let them have time to strategize and plan. Let them attend all relevant meetings and meet all relevant steak holders ( :) ). And let us, the grassroots cadres, allow our comrades to work with full dignity as we struggle together against ever increasing consumer and industrial greed for power.
