Johannesburg - Only seven percent of South Africa's waste-water treatment systems comply with international standards, reported Business Day on Wednesday.

According to the Green Drop report, compiled by the water affairs ministry, only 45% of waste-water systems assessed scored more than 50%.

Half of municipalities did not take part in the report, which was compiled from 2008 to last year.

Business Day said the report was meant to be released in November but had been kept under wraps.

It was expected to be made public on Wednesday.

Maybe London's disgusting tap water is more to do with water treatment. The Green Drop was introduced in 2008 and municipalities are expected to score above 90% on the management of wastewater discharge in order to ensure that they progressively improve their operations to reduce negative impacts on the water bodies into which they discharge their product.
