SA speeds up on 2010 bandwidth

Yeah, if we were running the 1999 World cup without any TV cameras or something.
 
Ok so let me not rant too much as the SA government needs to get their ass into gear.

T-Systems developed the 2006 Fifa World Cup network to operate at 480 Gbit/s to meet the requirements of Fifa's broadcasts and convergence network.

South Africa really only has one active cable the SAT3/WASC/SAFE and if memory serves me is only capable of 120 Gbit/s. Then there's the long awaited yet non existent EASSY cable which will be UPGRADEABLE to 320 Gbit/s.

Add the other 2 or 3 cable projects and it's still not a rosey situation as I doubt the other countries and telecoms companies making use of the cable are just going to say "here, use the entire available bandwidth for the world cup".

Do the math and the timeframe in terms of the soccer world cup and general broadband expansion in the country (residents and the influx of tourists during the period) and the numbers just don't add up in terms of capacity.
 
Can't they just use satellite bandwidth? They don't need the SAT3 cable to do the TV broadcasts, do they?

Or does that 480 G/bits figures not include TV transmissions?

There is plenty of Satellite bandwidth. DSTV doesnt use any cables! .. so why should the WC2010 depend on some pathetic fibre underwater cable.

TV transmission are not latency sensitive, as they are unidirectional.

There isnt an issue.... Some people confuse VIDEO bandwidth with INTERNET bandwidth. They are completely different things.
