As part of a broader comprehensive strategy to address the poor performance by learners in languages and numeracy, the Department of Basic Education, in partnership with Spell It South Africa, will today launch the Spelling Bee South Africa Competition for 2015.

The Annual National Assessments (ANA) results have in the past reflected poor learner comprehension and performance, not only in language, but also in numeracy and Mathematics.

Spelling Bee South Africa contributes to learners’ ability to read and write competently, said the Department of Basic Education

“The overall objective of the competition is to stimulate an interest amongst learners in learning languages and other subjects that will broaden their horizons.”

The Spelling Bee concept originated many years ago in the United States of America and is about the glory of being able to overcome the complexities of words that makes one a champion speller. – SAnews.gov.za

But are they incorporating the South African versions of the words?
As heard on radio and tv broadcasting.

e.g. berd, instead of bird
wek instead of work
meellion -> million etc. etc. etc.

I can already see it - to make things fairer - AA candidates will be asked words out of The Cat in the Hat. Non AA candidates will be asked words out of the Oxford Concise Dictionary.

I only have to repeat the punchline to the joke here.
'Geeve heem another chance!'

You misspelled meelyawn.

It's only just recently been launched and already black students are being prematurely criticized? Sorry we don't enunciate or pronounce words as good as you all do. Its funny no one criticizes those who aren't black when they mess up pronunciations in our languages. Wouldnt a Spelling Bee attract only the best entrants? And aren't words in The Cat in the Hat also in The Oxford Concise Dictionary as well?

No more reading, spelling tests and deducting points for spelling mistakes on papers?

I think the bulk of the cynicism goes toward the dept. of education as opposed to the learners themselves.

Check again what raind33r and Compton_Effect posted. Both their posts are clearly targeted at how so called "AA candidates" pronounce words. Nothing in their posts suggests they are being cynical towards the Department of Education.
