SA vs Zimbabwe Internet Battle

So back here in Zim and decided to check how 'bad' the internet is here. We pay 80USD for a 1meg WIMAX uncapped(512 during business hours). Currently speedtest is sitting at between 1.8 and 2.4 Mbps, upload at 0.4 to 0.6 and even better torrents running at 200kB/s!!!! All this with no 'Acceptable Usage', no throttling and no shaping.


Hang your head in shame South Africa, on my 2 meg 'Premium' Mweb line in Joburg I'm lucky to get these speed tests and if I got torrents at these speeds I would wet myself... At the grand total of R710 a month.
 
They probably only have 1000 subscribers..

And?? The broadband here is slower and more expensive here than in ZIMBABWE which until 4 years ago was in a complete economic meltdown which it's barely recovering from and until 2 years ago didn't have a single fiber cable running into the country sending everything over VSAT...

More customers = more capital to build a better, faster network. It should not just = more profit on the same old infrastructure....

MWeb & torrents should never be mentioned in the same breath.

I reckon you'll get a competitive 2Mb uncapped service here in SA for less than the equivalent of $80US from Afrihost, Axxess, TI and others.

This is true but only because unlike any other country in the world we had WIMAX systems and 3G/mobile running BEFORE ADSL:) so when it was introduced they had to compete with the current offerings and now prices are dictated by private companies not Tel-One(our Telkom).

MWeb & torrents should never be mentioned in the same breath.

Haha true, but it's what I'm on so couldn't really compare with anything else...

Telkom Internet 2MB bundle R607, thats R103 cheaper than you paying with torrents running at 200kbps. All without having to leave South Africa. No need to hang heads in shame here bud.. #REALITYCHECK

I'm on ZOL wimax in Harare. Internet is near useless during the day. I'll take my R799 4MB telkom uncapped anyday.

**** Telkom and SA I'm moving to namibia where the uncapped is slow but it comes with free ZOL.
I doubt I'll even notice the speed difference after a slow boat :whistle:
