Legends and young guns light up Betway SA20 Season 5 Player Auction

Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, Shimron Hetmyer and Trent Boult among the headline names, but teenager Jason Rowles claims the biggest price tag at R2.9m

The Betway SA20 Season 5 Player Auction produced a captivating blend of proven international pedigree and exciting young talent as the four remaining franchises finalised their squads on Wednesday in Johannesburg.

Leading the list of headline signings was former Proteas captain Faf du Plessis, who sparked considerable interest before being secured by Joburg Super Kings for R2.7 million, making him one of the biggest buys of the day.

The 42-year-old was at the centre of a bidding war between JSK and rivals MI Cape Town but ultimately returned to the Wanderers where he has spent the past four Betway SA20 seasons.

Du Plessis will be joined at the Bullring by another highly experienced T20 veteran in West Indies superstar Kieron Pollard. The legendary T20 all-rounder, who is the all-time leading run-scorer in men's T20 cricket history, was snapped up by Joburg Super Kings for R1.5 million. Pollard will bring his trademark power-hitting, game management and championship-winning pedigree to the Super Kings. JSK have also announced allrounder Jamie Overton as their Wildcard player, which means all six teams have confirmed their 19-player squads.

MI Cape Town were not going to be outdone and invested heavily in Proteas all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, securing his services for R2.6 million, while also adding West Indies power-hitter Shimron Hetmyer for R1.5million in the first purchase of the day.

Former Proteas top-order batter Rassie van der Dussen will meanwhile continue his Betway SA20 journey with the Pretoria Capitals after being secured for R500,000, adding stability and experience to the Capitals' batting unit as they look to go one step further after finishing as runners-up for the second time last season to Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

To help the Capitals get there will be Proteas Test and ODI captain Temba Bavuma. The 36-year-old will be enjoying his third stint in Betway SA20 after helping the Sunrisers Eastern Cape to their first two championships.

While established stars dominated much of the conversation, the most dramatic moment of the auction belonged to 18-year-old Jason Rowles. The highly rated Under-23 prospect became the subject of an intense bidding battle between MI Cape Town and Joburg Super Kings, with both franchises recognising his long-term potential.

After a spirited contest, JSK emerged victorious, securing Rowles for R2.9 million, the standout purchase of the entire auction.

The fierce competition for Rowles underlined the growing value being placed on emerging South African talent within the Betway SA20 ecosystem. His acquisition not only represents a major investment in the future but also highlights the League's ongoing role in identifying and accelerating the development of the country's next generation of stars.

"This year's auction showed exactly what Betway SA20 has become,” Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said. “It’s become a home where world-class players like Faf du Plessis, Shimron Hetmyer and Trent Boult sit alongside South Africa's brightest young talent. Jason Rowles was the highlight of the day for me. Seeing an 18-year-old spark the biggest bidding battle of the day tells you how much the franchises believe in the next generation. It was only last year that he was participating in the Final of the rain Schools SA20 and today he will get to be a part of a squad consisting of some of the world’s best T20 stars. That's the pathway we set out to build, and it's hugely encouraging to see it working."

Three-times champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape once again showed their shrewdness at the auction table by completing their 19-player squad with the addition of Proteas left-arm seamer Nandre Burger and England allrounder Craig Overton.

They now form part of a formidable Sunrisers Eastern Cape pace attack that already includes Anrich Nortje, Marco Jansen, Adam Milne and Lutho Sipamla.

MI Cape Town also strengthened their seam bowling stocks with the return signing of New Zealand fast-bowling great Trent Boult and 21-year-old Oliver Whitehead, while Betway SA20’s global appeal stretched to the USA and Zimbabwe with JSK acquiring Andries Gous and Blessing Muzarabani.

"It's also really pleasing to see so many Proteas players being picked up today,” Smith added. A strong League and a strong national team go hand in hand, and today was a good example of that.”

Betway SA20 Season 5 gets underway on Sunday, 17 January 2027, with Sunrisers Eastern Cape hosting Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park in Gqeberha in a repeat of last season’s final.

No mention of Paarl Royals or pic with their squad?

No mention of Paarl Royals or pic with their squad?
I presume because Durban's Super Giants and Paarl Royals didn't take part in the auction since they already had their full contingent.

But here you go - I found these in an earlier email.

Would be cool if they could add a Zimbabwe and a Namibia team but not sure it would be feasible, maybe after the World Cup if there is enough local interest.
