On the surface, 4 of the 5 look great, with Markrams 28.57 avg quite poor looking by comparison.

However, when you factor in highest scores in the 7 or 8 innings and the impact on said avg... Things look quite different beyond just Markram's seemingly by comparison below par avg of 28..

Without that 113 not out, Faf looks quite mediocre at best for example. Jacks, wthout his 92 takes significant hit too. Faf would be sitting at an avg of just above 27, below Markram.

With their lower HS, Buttler and Klaasen especially are showing much better consistency.

If you have 5 batters and they each only fire 20% of the time, but they play a match-winning innings when they do you'll have a VERY successful season.

If I was involved in player auctions I'd definitely use some sort of batting index metric. Perhaps average times strike rate divided by 100).

I'd rather have a guy averaging 20 at a SR of 200 (for an index of 40) than averaging 30 at a SR of 130 (index of 39).

Not necessarily. If your top 6 consistently score 30 - 40 each thats almost 200 and you win.
If one person makes an impact he has to make it huge, like a hundred, which in itself is rare as we've seen in Fafs case.
