because it is exactly that... it is the true test of a cricketers ability

Till today, we still regard the best test players as greats... Someone hits a hundred in a t20 and its forgotten by the end of the week

but test 100s and 5fers live in our memories and carry way more weight
Not necessarily.
At one point there was only Tests and ability was measured against that.

Your test career is limited but there's more opportunities/longevity in the shorter format.

Anyone can block and leave all day but can they score quickly?

That's where ability lies.

Nobody told that to any modern test batsman. Look at our Aus tour. Patience and seizing opportunities is an art too, something that T20 essentially destroyed.

Faf's heroics in Aus where he survived 2 days to save the match is still remembered. Who remembers his last hundred in any other format? Blocking and leaving isn't as simple as it sounds...

A long time ago and the question still stands
Look at Brevis, never made the national side but made millions by playing ipl, he will be happy to play T20 league cricket for the rest of his career, AB gave up national cricket for the same reasons
Money and fame trumps all

I get goosebumps thinking of all the tests I've watched where a team is against the ropes batting out the final day or two to salvage a draw.

The paradigm has changed test cricket was invented because there were no TV's and lots of time.

Players get dropped in an instant and never get recalled. What a miserable career to have if you can't at least make it in the shorter format.

Let's be honest they've been few and far in-between.
How many fizzled out to a tame draw or got rain disrupted?

When was the last time Proteas fought it out to provide edge of seat entertainment?

Who else do we root for when SA not playing.
Aus?
Eng?
Ind?

He is just saying that for what its worth, he is not independent he is still a SA player playing for the domestic league

He is enjoying 5 star treatment, and 5 star hotels and nett worth around R10 million he will play for proteas on a tour to Sri Lanka for R60 000 per month and staying at a 3 star holiday inn then change his mind and at 23 he will say he wants to focus on T20 and who can blame him

They have, and that's what makes it even more special when those games do come along. Personally I've been rooting for NZ over the last decade and more often than not have not been disappointed (at least not in the Test arena).

Maybe it's my old age, but I do feel like pitch quality isn't helping much either. The sub-continent seems focussed on preparing dust bowls where you can open the bowling with spin, and Aus seems intent on preparing green mambas where you can bowl your opponent out in the space of a T20 match.

I do however accept that the game has shifted and that I'll likely never recapture the nostalgia of Test cricket the way I remember it. I personally have no issue with the shorter formats and enjoy watching them, it's just that my best memories are of the red ball.

Politics played a big part in him leaving IMO. Also, he could've hung around IPL for a couple more years but decided not to.
Reasons come with options, once he had options he gave reasons, remove the option and he would not have reasons

Im just saying that I think T20 league cricket will take precedent over national cricket in the coming years

It doesn't fit your narrative so you simply dismiss it. Nice.

Create a dedicated thread if you wish to discuss it further
Im not picking sides or dismissing other formats, just telling what it is
Test cricket is the problem and has underwent the most reform in the past 10 years, pink balls, day night series, 4 day series, test championship trophies
The writing is on the wall whether we like it or not

Doubt it, Brevis he seems like a solid young guy who just wants to play cricket and pretty sure he has some decent mentors. Playing just the IPL and SA20 will bring in enough money the rest is just for passion and legacy. You can point fingers at AB all day long but anyone who plays over 100 tests (has the record for the most consecutive tests played) clearly chose SA over big money opportunities. He could have gave up on international cricket and just played T20's a lot earlier.
