I'm actually cool with low scoring games, the 1999 semi final being one of the best ever ODIs. As long as it's close though. Winning by 4 wickets with almost 4 overs to spare is hardly exciting...
There can be things to brag about in my line of work but standing in the rain ain’t one of them.

Aaron Phangiso’s bowling action cleared
Bowler re-tested action at ICC Accredited Testing Centre following suspension
Tuesday, 28 March 2023: Joburg Super Kings (JSK) left-arm spinner, Aaron Phangiso, undertook a re-test of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing Centre at the University of Pretoria, which noted an improvement in his action, and cleared the way for him to return to bowling.
As a result thereof, the Betway SA20 League’s Independent Expert Panel has confirmed they have lifted the suspension previously imposed upon him.
Phangiso has, since being first reported, been undergoing bowling action remodelling and remedial work with the support of Cricket South Africa (CSA) Head of High Performance, Vincent Barnes.
The Independent Assessment Report on his bowling action was carried out by Dr Helen Bayne and her team on 20 March 2023 and the findings presented to the Independent Expert Panel on 25 March 2023.
Betway SA20 wishes to thank all parties – CSA, the South Africa Cricketers’ Association, Northerns Cricket, JSK, the Independent Expert Panel and Dr Bayne for the professional manner in which the matter was handled and for the resources contributed.
The Independent Expert Panel is made up of Zama Ndamane, Gerrie Pienaar, Russell Domingo (in the place of Barnes) and Vernon Philander.

Ticket sales, digital and broadcast numbers validate successful inaugural Betway SA20 season
Data reveals how the league tapped into new markets and audiences
Friday, 14 April 2023: The success of the inaugural Betway SA20 season has been further supported by the audience, viewership and engagement data released today. High quality and entertaining cricket dominated the 33 matches played, which included six sold out matches including the final, and a remarkable 74% of tickets sold across all matches.
With the vision to become South Africa’s No.1 sport and entertainment brand, the data from the first season reveals how Betway SA20 tapped into new markets and audiences. In-stadium attendance encouragingly reflected a much younger and more diverse audience with loyal support from families, with many spectators attending a cricket match for the first time. Research conducted by the League also showed that fans very quickly developed a deep loyalty and affinity for each of the city-based franchise teams. There was an 80% positive brand sentiment, showing the optimistic affinity towards South Africa’s premier T20 League.
The interest from the fans was also reflected in the positive social media engagement, which resulted in 29 million video views throughout the season, 177.5 million social media impressions and 13 million social media interactions.
Betway SA20 was broadcast to seven different territories through SuperSport in Sub-Saharan Africa, Viacom 18 in India, Sky Sports in the UK, Fox Sports in Australasia, Etisalat in the UAE and to the rest of the world via ICC TV
In South Africa, the League was the most watched sport event on average on SuperSport Premium during the period, with a cumulative viewership of 8.96m. The biggest positive was the 46% female viewers who made up the unique audience and affirmed the strategic goal of being a league for everyone.
India, which is Betway SA20’s key strategic market given the six Indian Premier League (IPL) linked local franchises reported 5 billion viewing time minutes, 131 million people reached and 104 million digital video views.
League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said: “The success of the inaugural edition of Betway SA20 was a team effort. I’d like to thank the franchises, commercial partners and broadcasters for their partnership and belief in our vision, the players for entertaining us and the public for their support to fill up the stadiums and create renewed interest in South African cricket. This has been a fantastic start which gives us a great foundation as we prepare for the second season.’’

Second season of Betway SA20 to expose more young talent
Teams to have increased salary purse and a rookie player in each squad
Wednesday, 14 June 2023: The new player regulations for Season 2 of Betway SA20 will give teams the opportunity to assemble powerhouse squads to build on the cricketing success of the inaugural edition held in January this year. The salary cap has been increased by R5.1 million to R39.1 million from the first year, allowing teams to attract the best talent and a license to assemble competitive squads.
The official trading window for South African players opened on the 1st June, giving teams an opportunity to pre-sign, trade, buy-out or retain players ahead of the auction.
In a new introduction, teams will be required to sign a rookie player; a South African player 22 years of age or younger who has not featured in the SA20 before.
Squad sizes will increase to 19 with the inclusion of the rookie player and the wild card player. Teams are required to have a minimum of 11 South African players in their squads. For the match day playing XI, teams can field a maximum of 4 overseas players and a minimum of 7 South Africans.
Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith, says the new regulations will ensure the second season of the League continues to produce a high standard of cricket associated with South Africa’s premier T20 League.
“We have put these new regulations in place to build on the successful first season of Betway SA20, which was underpinned by entertaining and quality cricket from some of the best players in the world. The teams have an opportunity to assemble the best of South African and international talent, which will no doubt produce competitive and a high standard of cricket for the fans in the second season.
“The addition of a rookie player to the squads shows our continued commitment and investment to giving young talent exposure on a global platform. We saw some special performances from the young players in our first season. SA20 remains aspirational for up and coming cricketers and this is another opportunity for them to showcase their skills.”
Sunrisers Eastern Cape were crowned the inaugural champions at a sold out Wanderers Stadium to close off a successful first season, which saw record crowds and a renewed interest in domestic cricket in South Africa.
The second season will take place in the same January window, with further details on the auction and the fixtures to be released soon.

Betway SA20 Season 2 Player Regulations
- Salary cap increase per team by R 5.1 M to now stand at R 39.1 M.
- Introduction of a rookie player per team. This is for South African players, 22 years of age or younger who have not featured in SA20 before.
- Player trading mechanism open for South African players so that teams can alter squads and make tactical trades to compile part of their squad before auction.
- Increase (by 1) of each team to pre sign overseas players – this means that players who may have been unavailable previously can be contracted even before the auction.
- Wildcard still available to teams.
- Squad sizes have increased to 19 including a rookie and wildcard.
- Minimum of 11 SA players per squad.
