Nice win for the boys last night - hoping Stubbs stays in as keeper.

Pollard calls on MI Cape Town to get up for DSG clash
Both teams in need of a win at Newlands

Tuesday, 23 January 2024: MI Cape Town host Durban’s Super Giants in the first match of the second half of the group stages on Tuesday evening at Newlands.

MICT currently find themselves in fourth place on the log standings, with two wins from their five matches, while DSG are one place better off having claimed three wins from their first five.

Both teams are looking to bounce back from derby defeats over the weekend.

MICT captain Kieron Pollard has already put the loss against Paarl Royals behind them and focused on the challenge that lies ahead.

“In this format, in every competition, from a batting perspective, each team has one of these collapses so hopefully this is the only one for us going forward. These things happen in cricket and in a tournament,” Pollard said.

“Having said that, the guys have been fantastic posting 200 and 160-plus and it’s one of these days when we didn’t strike. We just have to get up and move on – that’s what you have to do in professional sport. You can’t dwell too much and look too deep or try to divulge and over-analyse stuff and get guys in a shell … that’s not the way to go.”

There’s a similar sentiment in the Giants camp after they suffered a second successive defeat last Saturday at home against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

“We were bossing the match for most of it, up until we had 50 runs to go and then we just let it go at the end there. I think we read [the pitch] pretty spot on, it was just a lack of execution towards the end and the Sunrisers capitalised on that,” said DSG captain Keshav Maharaj.

DSG have not been at their best since the departure of Nicholas Pooran and Richard Gleeson after the first three matches, but Maharaj would have been pleased with the way all-rounder Wiaan Mulder stepped forward with a gritty half-century in the last game.

He will be hoping that Mulder can carry on his recent good form to allow impact players such as Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen to play their natural game.

“It’s brilliant to see [Mulder] take the opportunity that he had,” Maharaj said. “We always knew he had something special in him and I’m just glad he got the rewards for the hard work he’s putting in.”

This match will start at 17h30 (SAST) local time.

That stonis dismissal is hilarious.
Vital cameo played by Mulder to give dsg a chance.

Durban’s Super Giants back to winning ways at Newlands
Bonus point victory moves DSG back to second on the table

Tuesday, 23 January 2024: Durban's Super Giants (DSG) returned to winning ways in a crucial Betway SA20 match against MI Cape Town (MICT) at Newlands on Tuesday evening.

DSG were on a two-game losing sequence before bouncing back with a 36-run bonus-point victory to move back into second position with 18 points.

The visitors were sent in to bat and struggled initially after local boy and left-arm spinner, George Linde (2/15), reduced DSG to 23/2 in the third over.

Linde's victims were DSG debutant Tony de Zorzi, who raced to 20 off 11 balls (3x4, 1x6), attempting an ill-judged reverse sweep before also clean bowling Quinton de Kock the very next ball.

DSG’s innings was then rebuilt through a 43-run partnership between Matthew Breetzke (48) and Jon Jon Smuts (26).

But a double blow by wrist-spinner Thomas Kaber (2/20), who accounted for the wickets of JJ Smuts and the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen stemmed the visitors’ momentum.

It required a 20-ball 38 not out from Wiaan Mulder to eventually lift DSG to 157/6.

MICT were never in control of their run chase as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

There was a lack of partnerships throughout with only Sam Curran (38) and Dewald Brevis’ (21) 48-run stand for the fourth wicket providing any hope for the Newlands faithful.

It was DSG’s two new signings Noor Ahmad (3/22) and Marcus Stoinis (3/18) that inflicted the damage as MICT were restricted to 121/9.

MICT have a long break before their next crunch match away against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at St George’s Park on Saturday.

Player of the Match: George Linde (2/15).

I see the Dubai T20 started last week and seems like they had more pull (and money) for the international players. I was wondering where some of the T20 journey men and marquee players were.

I see Nicholas Pooran left the DSG to go play in the Dubai T20 tournament

They don't have more pull. They have slightly more money.
Pooran left cause he is captain of the side there.
Moeen Ali abandoned the event after one season to play in SA20.
The attendance in stadiums in ilt20 is woeful. The US T20 has better crowds.
Then let's not even talk about the level of cricket due to the UAE wickets.
They have more known names because they have zero quality local players.
