Cape Town - Siza Mzimela, CEO of embattled national carrier South African Airways (SAA) has announced her resignation.

She sent an email to SAA employees on Monday morning, stating “this is not a random move”.

“I have given this decision careful thought and feel that now is the best time to relinquish my position as your CEO and allow somebody else to pilot the company into the future.”

Mayihlome Tshwete, spokesperson for the minister of public enterprises, has confirmed that the department has knowledge of the email sent by Mzimela.

“At this stage we’re still trying to reach the chairman to determine if he has received her formal letter of resignation.”

SAA has been in the news the past month following the resignation of eight board members including the chairperson, Cheryl Carolus. The board has since been replaced.

Business Day reported on Monday that SAA made a loss of R1.25bn in the 2012 financial year. Mzimela does not mention this in her email.

How does someone with a BA become CEO of a national airline ?

Thanks. Now give us the REAL reason for your resignation.

How many more times. Privatise this damn airline!!! If it can be rescued by a private company...fantastic....if it fails...it fails. It is not like we dont have other airlines that we can use to go to the overseas.

This follows the whole board resigning last 2 week or so? No surprises here.

Well , I reckon whether I could do my job or not, if my new boss was instrumental in "disappearing" 90bar of clothing and textile workers' pension money into a scam with his charna's wife, I would also be making plans to jump ship at the first opportunity

Seriously though, I think everyone is getting out before the proverbial dung strikes the fan. I don't think we know the half of the kuk that has gone down at SAA

Jeezuz wept, the bullschidt never ceases to amaze me
"Their terms were up and they knew they were going to be rotated. The process had already gone through cabinet," Tshwete says. "We were waiting for the AGM in two weeks' time but they resigned before then. "The new board members are highly experienced in aviation and the new chairman, Vuyisile Kona, is a former SAA employee," he adds. Financial Mail 3 Oct 2012

If you are [-]fired[/-] golden-parachuted could you rationally be considered a "former employee" ?:D

I did not follow this. Why did they? The were given that huge security in the same time period?
I'm too lazy to search. But something happened between the board and the minister of Public Enterprises - Malusi Gigaba.
