Bear in mind the fine was 100 Million, they asked for the fine to be reduced because of poor finical results and people might have to be laid off, they also gave the same sad story to the workers, in-spite of the fact they knew they had made a fat profit that year
SAA like Telkom have done well for themselves, mainly due to the fact that they have had little competition
The SAA story - If you don't know Coleman Andrews was brought in from the USA to turn around SAA who were running at a loss (Much like Tom Barry and Telkom)
Mr Andrews earned over R232 Million in less than three years. Payments to consultants were R243 Million. The biggest of which was linked to... Mr Andrews. R118 million was paid to expatriates whom Andrews appointed. And there was mention of an e-commerce thing that cost over 100 Million before it was scraped
It was said that SAA made a profit of R 289 in the year 2000 - but when these figures were audited cracks started to appear, and it was reported as a 100 Million loss. Mind you when you consider the R 600 Million paid out to Andrews and Co... you could say turnover was up - gone.... but up
They are being sued by the ex-directors of Sun Air for 97 Million, Camair sued them for 346 Million which was settled for an un-disclosed amount - The story I heard on the Sun Air was that SAA moved in on them before Virgin Atlantic could.... the rumour was that Air fares could have been as low as R 200,00 single to any destination in the country (this was before the high fuel prices)
