SAA To Return To Perth 28 April 2024

My issue is the horribly outdated planes they are using. The onboard experience can't be good.
You are probably right because it's SAA who is broke but old plane doesn't mean bad interior. Edelweiss a340-300's have a sweet modern interior.

Interiors are often switched out during C or D checks (2 or 6 years).

edit: Onboard experience also includes service and although I haven't flown SAA since probably 2018 or so, their service was lacking compared to everyone. Even Business Class.

We had much better deals in the old apartheid day
SAA from 1987 to 2002 had a fleet of 148 aircraft servicing 74 international destinations and 24 local.
Today SAA has a fleet of 9 aircraft servicing 17 destinations in total.
May be an image of 4 people, aircraft and text

Things went downhill since they decided to remove Jan's name from airport. You can find cows and goats on ORT and SAA planes now.

SAA being doing so well since the great liberation movement got its hands on it, strength to strength, run like a well oiled machine. Viva comrades.

Let's look at facts..

SAA was a disaster. A sad, sad disaster... But...

Alitalia (state carrier) - has gone bankrupt and is "back" how many times now?
Olympic Airways (state carrier) - Went bang a few times, finally sold to Aegean and still flies but not under its own business.
Sabena (state carrier) - Went bang, didn't recover but operates some of its codes under codeshares.
Swissair (state carrier) - Same story, rebranded and relaunched
etc. etc.

While Government meddling is not responsible for them all (certainly for more of them than just SAA) - we need to also look at the fact that SAA's demise is not new, its not the last, and its able to recover. Many airlines have been turned around after politics and theft closed them.

I will give SAA a chance, and if it flies to more places i go to for work i'll fly them again.

Funny enough despite all the BEE stuff about pilots i flew on SAA twice in 2023 and our captain and 1st officer were nowhere near BEE levels... So i think while there is a BEE priority in hiring and training, i don't know if the conspiracy theories are all they're made out to be...

The only reason the government keeps SAA alive is so that all parliament members can enjoy free SAA local and international flights for themselves and their families. For life. This is a perk for life. No one in government is ever going to close the doors for SAA, it will always get bailouts in one form or another, they just change the wordings each year to not upset the tax payer any further.

Will have to wait and see. The privatisation deals still had not concluded.

Off topic. I wish they would reincororate the flying Springbok in the livery again. Don't have to go back to Orjane Blanje Blou again of course. Something like this.

Their call sign is still Springbok afterall.

Yep that would be nice.

Don't know if it will happen. Possibly, but they need to play their cards right.

After Perth, i hope SAA is eyeing China. Its a busy route and they should never have given it up to Air China solely. Dumbest move ever.

You are a breath of fresh air.

yeah nah with the rampant corruption eating away at funds and safety and procedures they can go fly a kite.

the defence of saa in this thread is pretty damn funny. as if this government/anc knows how to do somethiong right all of a sudden

I think there's no chance they would do anything like this as it might remind them of the past. Which means we will unfortunately also never see a retro SAA livery.

Solely?

I usually fly Emirates to Shanghai. Although I have been cheap and taken Ethiopian, or Qatar sometimes.

Thats at least 3 more that route that direction.

You can try and sell SAA for R1 and you still won't have any buyers. Those parliament members present and past all have free SAA local and international tickets for themselves and their family for life !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
