A batch of SA Air Force (SAAF) officers are the latest beneficiaries of Cuban military expertise and training thanks to what is known in the national defence force as a “foreign learning opportunity” (FLO).

The group, seemingly recently returned from Cuba as part of the joint Cuba/South Africa defence co-operation agreement Project Thusano, were congratulated by SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya, at air force headquarters on “graduating” in Cuba.

Captain Tebogo August of the SAAF publication Ad Astra, reports the air force officers “sharpened the edge” ahead of graduating, without specifying what course/programme/qualification they achieved.

Apart from Rum and cigars?

Check this pic out of the trainees and tell me why the once excellent SA Military Academy and military colleges couldn't have done the training?

Notice the short mini's and unkempt hair of the Cuban women? Completely at odds with Western forces.

Surprisingly, SA has more kit than Cuba, and none of it is the same .............

Correct. Not even the operating language and doctrine is the same. So what was the purpose of the course?

Also note how disorganised the course photo is with one person even with their back to the camera? Course photos are usually organised with some seated and some standing behind in a uniform pose in a strict rank order. This shows complete disorganisation and laissez-faire attitudes.

Yeah, discipline isnt a strong point in the new SA ..............

When the ANC starts complaining about poor discipline you should know its totally in se moer in.

So, does the SAAF write orders and do administration and planning in Spanish now and fly Warsaw Pact aircraft? What use would Cuban training be?

Military doctrine, which is odd, to be honest. Given the little the two militaries have in common, or rather how they are respectively purposed, not everything is interchangeable or compatible with each other either.

I guess, a lesson on maintaining your own military equipment would be welcomed since we lack that basic skill, you know.

Still, doctrine... the only reason we would be doing this, should there ever be an imbalance in the world order, which we are already deep into, that the Cubans, SA and Brazil are likely to be combined to make a larger tally or so to speak, otherwise their greater powers have three chickens without heads within their ranks. This is how I perceived it.

Brazil uses Western equipment as well as doctrine. So where do the Cubans and South Africa's training by them fit in? This seems to be an ANC money laundering exercise to get money to Cuba. It would be interesting to know what the courses were and how much per student was paid.

I guess it depends on how thick those manuals were which was issued per student.
