SABC launching HDTV signal

And they cut transmission from the presentation and show 5 minutes of ads :mad: how typical
 
Its great that they are testing it but we will only see it after 2010. They only have to be able to send the HD feed to the rest of the world. As usual we will get it much later.

Oh wait the US, Europe and Asia have had HD for ages :(

Atleast its a step in the right direction.

Doesnt really matter. So the UK just got it. We are still going to be waiting till after 2010.

Atleast I will soon have HD-DVD and Bluray to cure my HDTV itch.

In the US you get over teh air HDTV. :(

Not sure what happened, they had a presentation saying that in conjunction with Sentech and Multichoice, HDTV is now officially launched (first for Africa). And then when it's getting interesting, they cut transmission and show between 5-10 minutes of adverts :( Would love to know more myself.
 
Angellus : Do you have a proper (1080p) HDTV? I have been curious as to the price in SA for a while now
 
Um well, in order to view this 'HDTV signal', we will all need new set-top boxes and the necessary installations, so it doesnt really mean anything until these become available.. Anyway i thought they would launch their flagship channel, sabc3 in HDTV first

Our main HDTV is 1080i/720p but we might be upgrading it soon. Problem is most plasma's are 720p(can display 1080i tho). Only real 1080p options last time I checked were some 37" LCD and the Toshiba 1080p rear projection sets.

other HDTV is a 26" LCD(1366x768)

I am planning on buying a 24" Dell/BenQ with native res of 1920x1200.

Tired of always having to wait for everyting. :mad:
 
While SABC3 would be the pick of a bad bunch, SABC1 has the highest viewership of any channel.

Will be 1080i, 1080p is to bandwitdh intensive to be broadcast. Its possible but the broadcasters prefer using 1080i/720p because they use less BW and still provide very good image quality.

Current HD-DVD players cant display 1080p IIRC but all HD-DVD and Bluray discs are in 1080p.
 
nGAGEd55 : The signal would be, yes. That is essentially what true HDTV is. But you need a proper HDTV to make proper use of it. These are hideously expensive, so I was Angellus if he had one, and how much it cost
 
Angellus : Yep, the toshiba hd-dvd player has been a massive flop. Enthusiasts were expected to buy them in droves (as they would be the only people willing to pay the current high price). Unfortunatly the lack of 1080p has caused lackluster sales in this crucial, early adopter market

LOL sorry forgot the price.

our 36" CRT HDTV set us back R26k a few years back.

Just checked for interests sake.

1080p LCD's cost around $4,160.00 for a 47"
$2,132.00 for a 37" and $2,675.00 for a 42".

The only place you will get 1080p is on HD DVD and blu ray. Its not likely to be broadcast, for that they will likely stick to 1080i/720p for quite some time.

The other problem with that player is that it is actually a PC. It boots up, takes quite some time from inserting disc to be able to watch it.

I will wait it out for now.

That is true but also the people that watches sabc1 mostly wont have the cash to upgrade to HDTV tv's

True but the world cup is broadcast on 1 :) They announced this during half-time

hdtv was launched here around the end of last year. Telewest cable customers have been getting hdtv since the beginning of the year already, sky launched their hdtv box around 3 weeks ago (probably where you got your information from) and the bbc have been broadcasting 3 hidef signals over dvb-t from the crystal palace transmitter since around march (me watching world cup in hidef at home using just an aerial on the roof:-))

But announcements like what the sabc gave today were given here a few years ago, so dont go panic buying hd stuff....it takes a while for broadcasters to get going.
