Goodbye TV Licence — More South Africans stop paying

The SABC says its revenue from TV licence fees continued to decline in the 2022/2023 financial year, recording its biggest increase in evasion since the Covid-19 pandemic.

This confirmation came from SABC Board chair Khathutselo Ramukumba during a briefing to Parliament's Communications and Digital Technologies portfolio committee early last week.

You just need a TV licence, they don't check if it's paid up.

Technically if it's not paid up you do not in fact have a valid TV license. My understanding is that they cross-check your ID number against a live API provided by the SABC at the time of purchase. You would think that their system would immediately flag that the retailer should not be selling a TV to someone with an invalid TV license.

I am still not paying my R3800, which I get reminded monthly by some law firm... It's the right thing to do...

What happens to those that diligently paid their licenses. They should be given something in return.
Those that don't want to pay should be fine for getting away with murder

Exactly, the API checks for all of that and even returns the balance. It needs to be up to date.
