So you know how we have all these news articles about how, unless you contact a professional to assist with your tax matters when emigrating, the government is going to rip you a new one, throw you in jail and penalise you into poverty "according to Somebody Someone, director at Sable International".

And then you contact them and they cannot be arsed to respond over a week later.

Just another SA company with SA manure grade service, will prob blame it on covid or some other excuse...if they even bother. I swear it is only Investec and Allan Gray who know what customer service is.

Anyway, so much for all those BS paid for articles. Anybody know of an alternative company to them?

Are you planning on taking your retirement funds out?

the only thing those Sable clowns are interested in, is the whole emigration process and reaming you a new one on the fees related to that...

I've written off my RA and stopped contributing a while ago. Cashed out my pension at my previous employer as well. That RA money can sit there and do whatever for three years until/if they ever pay it out. When I look at my total wealth I don't even consider it.

My questions are regarding future tax returns and staying on the right side of SARS with regards to proving intent to leave etc. so as not to be double taxed. And then I need somebody to actually file the tax returns because my current accountant, in he own words, don't know this stuff (which is concerning...)

Actually, all I'm looking for is a decent accountant that know how to do their job :)

I’d expect that you wouldn’t need FE, and would just have to tick “non-resident” on your e-filed returns once the status applies to you. There may be some rockiness depending on timing (tax year boundary and emigration date) where you request an extension so that you can file as a non- resident the given year (ie, if you would become a non-resident during this extension period). I suppose that depending on your CG situation there may be some complexity there too.

Of course, please check and report what you hear, but that’s my understanding.

We'll see what the new tax laws bring in 2021 :/

My biggest concern is citizenship based taxation at some point. I’ve heard no mention of it, but that would cause me to renounce my citizenship.

Technically...but given the way the wind is blowing lately I'd consider doing FE anyway.

You may be barking up the wrong tree there. The process is primarily driven by exchange control regs, with SARS tax clearance thing basically bolted on.

Won't really be covered by the educational curriculum of a Bcom accounting, especially not the paperwork side. So either you need an accountant that happens to know this by chance/experience or you get to pay fine companies like sable their princely sum.

Unlikely. The combination of residency & source based taxation is baked into the SA tax system. Would require a massive rewrite
