Can you be tracked using news groups to download content like you can with torrents?

On another note, usenet is remarkably safer than torrents as only your ISP can (theoretically) see what you are downloading. That's also only if they are actively monitoring your data.

Not as easily. With torrents you don't need access to the servers (seeders/peers uploading), where-as with Usenet you will need to ask the ISP for server logs, in which case most ISPs will respond with you first need to get a warrant before they will just give out information on their users.

From my side, I am way too lazy to dig through logs, and clients give us money, so its easier to force them and ask for a warrant.

Another advantage of news servers is that you are not distributing anything, you are only downloading. Unlike torrents where you will be seeding which effectively means you are acting as a distributor of the content.

I use IS backbone and have moved from a 5 star rating to 3 star. So they must be monitoring something - hence the original question. ADSL speed has ground to a standstill on a 1mb uncapped line

I don't run SSL on my intl usenet account. The Mweb server doesn't support it afaik. Mweb isn't too fond of SSL (so they say, but everyone I know uses SSL on Mweb).

ISPs are not allowed to snoop on your traffic.

The notices that torrent users receive typically originate from overseas companies, and it's easy to see which IP address is downloading which file. They pass these notices on to the ISP who forwards it to you.

With Usenet, it's not as easy to do this.
