What happened to transfers and cheques? I think that SARS may wants to look into this as well. It seems "they" wanted to keep this an off-book transaction, I wonder how many more are conducted like this.

Agreed sox, dodgey donations to political organisations are a problem, just look at PetrolSA/Imvume/ANC as another example.

I think I would support a legislation that forces all political parties that are in parliament to disclose their funders. IIRC there was one proposed and ALL parties shot it down basically.

Of course they'd shoot it down - secrecy is a key ingredient in ensuring the unencumbered flow of gravy.
 
Whether they lose it now or the SACP loses it latter in one of their schemes makes little difference to me.

Politcal parties are exempt from income tax btw.

I think the party has to issue a receipt, however they are not taxed on the money received. It's the funders responsibility to ensure they declare the donation to the party.
 
Just to be clear - anyone donating (i.e. a donor) a sum more than 100k in a calendar year has to pay 20% tax on the donated amount to SARS. They do not need to declare to SARS who they're donating to, as long as they make it clear the amount being donated - and their accounts reflect the donation correctly.

This tax is equally applicable to private individual donors as well as donations from companies. Child Support and Maintenance is exempted from this tax.

I remember that both the ANC and DA were against it - there was a party that supported it, can't remember if it was ID or ACDP?

It was IDASA's initiative; more here, and it was the ACDP that disclosded all their major funders.

When people are buying themselves influence (and state funerals) at the expense of democracy, we have a right to know.

As much as we have a right to know, I fear though that once Political parties have to disclose the sources of their funding, their funders would just stop contributing for fear of being seen to support the policies of that party.

Remember when Mulder from the FF+, got all pissed of with Sanlam and the 10k donation they made to the FF+? Even I thought that Sanlam was not right in doing that as they have made most of their money through the people that support parties like FF+. Can you imagine the fallout that would happen if it was all transparent and we could see who actually runs this country?

This whole thing stinks - as usual. And nothing will be done.
 
I think that as we get closer to the ANC's end of year conference we will see more of this kind of accusation, anonymous letters and general jockeying for position in the alliance.
Not saying that there isn't fuel for this fire, but I think that we're going to see all kinds of information, dis- and misinformation in the next few months.
